Simone Biles
It’s September 1, and that means in addition to everyone heading back to Hogwarts today, we’re now only about seven weeks away from world championships! Wasn’t everyone just getting injured in Montreal?
There weren’t that many meets in August, but the ones that did happen were big ones, including the European Championships, Asian Games, and U.S. Championships, all of which saw gymnasts contributing new scores to our 2018 Best Scores list, including the first all-around scores above a 59 or 60 with Simone Biles’ awesome performances in Boston a couple of weeks ago.
So far, we’ve seen 4,785 all-around performances, as well as 6,371 vault scores, 6,603 bars scores, 6,746 beam scores, and 6,585 floor scores, in addition to 1,617 two-vault attempts that get averaged for an event final (or qualification into a final).
Below, find a list of the top all-around and event scores thus far, as well as the top D scores for each event. An asterisk (*) next to the name denotes a junior competitor, and I’ve removed bonus from all domestic meets to keep things consistent. As a note, we only include juniors in the two-vault averages or D-score combos if they’re competing vaults from two different families, and if a competition uses bonuses but their score sheets don’t differentiate those bonuses from the totals, we don’t include those scores in our database.
As a reminder, this is just a fun way to track the top range of scores in the all-around and on each event. Obviously every meet is scored at a different standard and it’s impossible to compare from meet to meet, but calm down — it’s nothing serious. We’re not predicting the next Olympic champion or electing the next leader of the free world. It’s just easier this way to see a range of scores that could be the goal gymnasts will be trying to reach at bigger international competitions.

Could Morgan Hurd medal in any event finals this year? Relative to her competition she doesn’t look like she has a stand-out event. I’m wondering if the beam overscoring will be on her side again this year

She’s a solid all-arounder and a top three on any event which is awesome for the TF and AA competitions, but hard in the scheme of making EFs. I could see her making beam again if she has her punch front and full-in dismount back…I think she’s second-best to Simone on that event in the U.S. And then if Riley or Jade make mistakes on bars or floor, she could get into either of those. I think we could see her getting two-per’ed out of finals instead of flat-out not making them.

Just reminding that national meets there is an overscore comparing to international meets. But Heereveen and Brazilian national the overscore was embarrassing , really, so I don’t think Wevers and Hypolito deserved to be in that list, sorry. Just trying to be fair with the ones not in the list that scored realistically better than them.

I love how mai has scored more than simone one floor with that ridiculously over-scored japan championships.

U.S. Championships is just as overscored as Japan’s nationals. Simone will likely beat Mai with better landings and no OOB at worlds but Mai’s got a high 8 E score at worlds last year and her E scores in Japan were similar this year, she just has a bit more D than she did at worlds.

Are US Championships more over scored on certain events than others? ie bars over say beam? etc. I ask because in 2015 Simone scored day 2 on floor a 15.850 on floor. Then in 2015 worlds EF she scored 15.800. So the scores werent that far off… So are US championships more off on certain events, meaning overscored?

Jade isn’t in the top for vault?

She’s only competed a DTY and Lopez so far this year which doesn’t put her toward the top of the difficulty spectrum

Can we have a list of best D-scores for AA?
