Around the Gymternet: Keep it 100

“the year is 2038. Simone has retired and opened her own gym in houston. Aly now runs USAG. morgan Hurd, Olympic champion, coaches at FSG. Shawn Johnson is still pregnant” -Twitter user @raismansbun. This one made me cackle.

First words

So this is the hundredth edition of Around the Gymternet. In celebration, I chose this image of gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci somewhere between being rightfully confused/pissed about receiving a 1.00 — after competing the one of the best bar routines of all time — and realizing she had actually received a perfect 10. Bless.

If your brain chemistry is anything like mine, most of the time life is either a 10 or a one. Writing this newsletter has been a nine. Thanks for reading.

Wut happened

Couple things. A new California law extending the statute of limitations for child sex abuse victims could benefit about a dozen survivors of Larry Nassar, and USA Gymnastics was granted more time to submit a plan for bankruptcy.

Also this. Full results from worlds are here (women and men), and here are Lauren’s thoughts about the men’s teams.

Star status

Lineups. Here’s your Cottbus World Cup nominative roster.

There was some confusion over whether Filipa Martins (who placed 65th all-around at worlds) or Beatriz Cardoso (who was 86th) is going to the Olympics for Portugal. I don’t speak Portuguese (!) but the federation clarified that while Martins earned the spot, they’re also happy that Cardoso almost did. Cute.

Upgrades. Maria Paseka was spotted candle mounting a balance beam, perhaps as a form of cruel and unusual punishment; Karis German did an almost laid-out stalder tkatchev because why the hell not; and Olivia Greaves is working on some bars upgrades along with Sunisa Lee, also because why the hell not.

Injuries. Looks like Kelly Simm withdrew from the Brabant Trophy with an injury.

Retirements. Rianna Mizzen of Australia announced her retirement after injury. Good luck in your future gravity-based endeavors, Rianna!

Comebacks. Riley McCusker is back in the gym (Hi, Riley!), and Jordan Chiles got stitches taken out of her wrist (not for the squeamish).

Staying social

Skinner’s getting married. MyKayla Skinner got engaged and is getting married like tomorrow. Congratulations, MyKayla!

John Lee is a world champ. Sunisa Lee’s dad is home from the hospital and has three new accessories! Much love to the Lee family ❤

Shawn broke her toe. Shawn Johnson was in the hospital not to give birth but to take care of a broken toe. Honestly, at this point I would just ask them if I could get some sort of two-for-one inducement/toe x-ray deal? Spicy foods, Shawn!

Artur wants a burger. Artur Dalaloyan wants a burger. And he knows his in-the-air expressions are funny.

Simone will throw a ball. Simone will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Game 2 of the world series, which means I’ll be awake for at least five seconds of a baseball game for the first time in my life.

Sveta’s a mama again. Since finding out Shawn was pregnant last week, Svetlana Khorkina got pregnant, gestated, and had her baby already. Sveta will not be upstaged by an American, not again. Sveta never forgets.

  1. + Sabrina Voinea 12yo had a Higher D Score on her tumbling than the world Silver and Bronze medal! But Barbosu once again beats Voinea for the national title

  2. I don’t speak Portuguese either, but maybe this helps to solve the Filipa Martins – Beatriz Cardoso-mystery:

The Hungarian federation claims that Zsófia Kovács (30th AA) earned a berth for Hungary, but since Bianka Schermann (44th AA)’s 51.198 is still higher than that of the first reserve after the 20 who earned a berth, it’s up to the Hungarian federation to decide whether they will send Kovács or Schermann to the olympics. Since Chuso ranked 87th and she still qualified from AA, Portugal’s 86th Cardoso obviously earned more points than the first reserve. If the Hungarian federation is right, then the Portuguese federation is also allowed to decide whether they send Martins or Cardoso, even though it was officially Martins who earned the spot.

    • The Portuguese Federation never considered pulling Martins out to get Cardoso in. Their announcement was basically a celebration that, even though Martins got the spot, Cardoso was also in the score range of qualification. So had Martins not competed for whatever reason, Cardoso would have earned an Olympic spot for Portugal on her own which is super huge because aside from Martin’s, Portugal doesn’t have that many high level gymnasts so seeing someone ready to continue that legacy is amazing.
