The United States, Japan, and Great Britain lead Olympic qualification through the all-around world cups!

1:25 pm. Lorette Charpy, France, FX: Double front, cowboyed one of the tucks, then flew forward OOB. Really tried to save it but I think ultimately had to put her hands down. Hit the double tuck. Front full with two little steps. Low landing on the double pike. 11.266

1:23 pm. Georgia Godwin, Australia, VT: Tsuk full, suuuuper solid, and nearly stuck! Just kinda lifts her right foot for a second to adjust it. 13.666 (4.8, 8.866)

1:22 pm. Zhang Jin, China, FX: Whip to triple to punch front, a little stumble at the end but love the effort of that pass. Good leap series, finished with a lovely switch ring. 2.5, punches low into the front tuck, and sits it. UGH. I cry. Double pike, low and long with a step back to control it, may have been OOB. 12.033 (5.5, 6.633, -0.1)

1:21 pm. Sarah Voss, Germany, VT: Put up the number for her usual DTY, doesn’t really have the gas, goes for a 1.5, and sits it. 😦 12.333 (5.0, 7.433, -0.1)

1:19 pm. Alba Petisco, Spain, FX: I love this music so much. It’s crazy but so cool. She’s like okay, I can’t have lyrics? I’m gonna POP OFF on getting as close as I possibly can. Tucked full-in, solid. Really does it like a true half-in half-out I think. Ugh, sits the arabian double front. Switch to switch full. Whip to  double tuck, a little low but keeps it up. Wolf turn. Double pike with a step back. 11.433 (4.8, 6.633)

1:16 pm. Morgan Hurd with a 55.832 to snag this competition!

1:14 pm. Giorgia Villa, Italy, FX: At first I think her music is gonna “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof. Then it WILDLY changes. Front double full to front tuck, very strong. Hands down on the tuck full-in. Switch to switch half. Double L turn to pirouette, kinda skids the L turn a bit. Really high double tuck. 11.933

1:13 pm. Kayla DiCello with a 55.132 in her senior debut! Hitomi Hatakeda currently second with a 53.799….I think she’ll hold onto a podium spot. Much-deserved, she’s had an incredibly strong day.

1:12 pm. Morgan Hurd, United States, FX: I didn’t watch her floor from podium training because I wanted to experience it live for the first time. Double double, fabulous, just a hop to the side. Front double full, also very strong in the air and on the landing. Switch ring to tour jeté full, then a full-in with a hop back. Switch half. She’s killing it. Split jump full to a hop pirouette. Finishes with a nearly stuck double pike. OUR GIRL’S ON FIRE. 13.666 (5.4, 8.266)

1:11 pm. Kayla DiCello, United States, VT: DTY, huuuuuuuuge! First twist is super duper clean. Softens her knees and hips in the second twist, but still really solid. 14.533 (5.4, 9.133)

1:10 pm. Career-best 53.565 for Jennifer Gadirova, WITH a fall on bars. Honestly. We stan.

1:08 pm. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, VT: Really solid and clean FTY! Like, actually almost perfect, just not super huge or anything. Little slide back. 13.600 (4.6, 9.000)

1:06 pm. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, FX: The world’s biggest double double with a fabulous landing. I want to cry, it’s so freaking good. Switch ring to tour jeté half. Front layout full through to double tuck, baby step back. Really cutesy fun choreo that she performs super well. She’s gonna be a star, my god. Switch full. EXTENSION. 2.5, excellent. I’m honestly dead. I’m deceased. 13.700 (5.3, 8.400)

1:04 pm. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, VT: Perfectly stuck FTY! Soft hips in the air but that landing was *chef’s kiss* 13.500 (4.6, 8.900)

1:03 pm. Ellie Black, Canada, FX: I wasn’t typing during her first pass, but she did something into a double pike. I forget if she does a front skill or a 1.5? Whatever, it was a good pass. Also hit the front double full to front tuck and a leap series after. Now I’m all caught up. Super clean double full to finish. Okay, then, Ellie. She just got the call for this meet like a week ago and here she is like hi I’m always ready, never doubt me. 12.600 (4.5, 8.100)

12:59 pm. ROTATION 3 STANDINGS

1. Morgan Hurd, United States, 42.166
2. Ellie Black, Canada, 40.699
3. Kayla DiCello, United States, 40.599
4. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, 40.199
5. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, 39.865
6. Lorette Charpy, France, 39.666
7. Giorgia Villa, Italy, 39.599
8. Zhang Jin, China, 38.599
9. Georgia Godwin, Australia, 38.033
10. Sarah Voss, Germany, 37.999
11. Alba Petisco, Spain, 37.666
12. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, 36.933

12:57 pm. Zhang Jin, China, BB: Hit her jump series into the Korbut, love it. Bhs bhs layout, excellent lift there. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Full turn, slight adjustment. Switch leap to sheep jump, little wobble. Great extension on the transverse split jump half. Double full with a step back. 14.133 (6.0, 8.133)!!!

12:55 pm. Sarah Voss, Germany, FX: Selling that opening choreo! 1.5 to front full to start, I think. Triple full with a step to the side. Bamf! Double pike, good form in the air but she comes in a bit low and has to lunge out of it. Sits the last pass. UGH. 11.600 (4.8, 6.800)

12:52 pm. Alba Petisco, Spain, BB: Layout stepout mount, looks like she’s gonna fall, but just hops it back upright. Queen. Full turn. Does a cute little skip in the run into her punch front, love it. Hit a straddle jump right after. Triple flight series, pretty good, check at the end. Hit her transverse split jump half and an aerial as well. Lots of little adjustments but nothing super rough. Hit the double tuck. 12.433 (5.3, 7.133)

12:50 pm. Kayla DiCello, United States, FX: Full-twisting double layout, good! A little piked at one point but solid upgrade for her. Double pike, super open, just a small hop back. Triple wolf turn is great. Double also good. 1.5 to front full with a slight hop, she’s a bit loose there just in her overall body line I think? Switch ring to tour jeté half. Double tuck, chest a bit low, step forward. Good routine. 13.400 (5.5, 7.900)

12:48 pm. Giorgia Villa, Italy, BB: Hit the layout stepout mount! Off on the tuck full series, though. UGH. Split jump half to split jump, that’s pretty cool honestly. Switch half. Double wolf turn, good. Side aerial. Double full with a hop back. Another one of those “shame about the fall” routines because it was otherwise strong. 12.533 (5.4, 7.133)

12:44 pm. Morgan Hurd, United States, BB: Standing full, excellent!! Great chest position. Side aerial layout stepout, basically perfect. Maybe the slightest adjustment. Front aerial to split jump to split ring jump, great. Maybe the back foot? Switch to straddle, EXCELLENT split on that straddle. Solid full turn. Switch ring, misses her back leg pretty much fully and has to wobble, but stays on. Just the dismount left. Full-in with a hop back, just some leg form in the twist. Really great routine minus the switch ring. 13.733 (5.7, 8.033)

12:42 pm. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, FX: Tucked full-in with a slight step back. Double turn in front attitude to pirouette. Clean 2.5 to front tuck. Switch full. Hit the last pass, but I couldn’t really see it. Overall, another great set from her! 12.933 (5.1, 7.833)

12:39 pm. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, BB: Candle mount, the crowd doesn’t love it as much this time. They’re like “we saw this already!!!!” Switch to switch half to back tuck, EXCELLENT extension on those leaps!!! And the height on the tuck omg. Switch ring, a little iffy there but mostly fine, tbh. Bhs loso loso, some slight leg form, and a check on the landing. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, her extension is beyond great. RIGHT THROUGH THE TOES. Like, she’s pointing her FEET, not just scrunching up her toes. So rare in gymnastics. Full-in, CASUAL, with a step. FANTASTIC. 13.933 (5.8, 8.133)

12:37 pm. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, FX: Double tuck with a hop back. 2.5 to front tuck is done really well, solid on the landing. Tour jeté half, and a leap series after that but I couldn’t really see details. Love this bridge she does in her choreo, it’s so lovely. Mustafina turn, just comes out of it a little early. Double full, some ankles in the air, but solid again on the landing. 12.700

12:35 pm. Ellie Black, Canada, BB: Hit her leap mount. Double spin, leg raised slightly. Bhs layout is SUPER solid, and the layout position is actually creditable I think! From my angle anyway. Switch to switch half to back handspring, maybe just feet on the leaps? Side somi, solid. Front full dismount. YAS. 13.166 (5.1, 8.066)

12:33 pm. Georgia Godwin, Australia, FX: Triple wolf turn, great. Front layout to double front, overdoes the landing a bit, to her hands, sadly. I think she’s trying to overcompensate for not getting a TON of height in this pass out of the front layout, so she kind of throws herself forward on the landing so she doesn’t end up doing the opposite (sitting it), but sometimes she just does a little TOO much forward. Double tuck with a bounce back. Great Memmel turn (IN THE HOLY LAND OF MEMMEL! #WISCONSIN) to full pirouette. Switch leap to tour jeté half. Good double pike to finish, just a bit deep in the landing. 11.700

12:30 pm. Lorette Charpy, France, BB: Layout stepout mount, kinda stumbles through it but keeps it on! Bhs loso, solid. Triple wolf turn, great. A little wobbly through the double, though. Side aerial. Switch leap, nice back leg, it got noticeably higher than most, to split leap to Korbut, transverse split jump half, front aerial to split jump, back leg looked low there, to back handspring. Double pike, low with her chest, takes a step forward. Not bad, just had its little weak spots. 12.733 (5.4, 7.333)

12:28 pm. ROTATION 2 STANDINGS

1. Morgan Hurd, United States, 28.433
2. Ellie Black, Canada, 27.533
3. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, 27.266
4. Kayla DiCello, United States, 27.199
5. Giorgia Villa, Italy, 27.066
6. Lorette Charpy, France, 26.933

8. Georgia Godwin, Australia, 26.333
9. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, 25.932
10. Alba Petisco, Spain, 25.233
11. Zhang Jin, China, 24.466
12. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, 24.233

12:25 pm. Alba Petisco, Spain, UB: Maloney to bail, ankle separation, to toe-on to clear hip to toe shoot, very nice on everything here. Blind change to piked Jaeger. Hop change, cant get it to handstand, has to rest on the bar for a second and then repeat it into the straddle Jaeger. Blind full, TOE POINT!!! Full-out with a step back. 11.833 (4.9, 6.933)

12:24 pm. Kayla DiCello, United States, BB: Triple wolf turn, good. Then a double. Little checks on both but nothing super noticeable. Side aerial to split jump to sissone. Switch leap is solid. Bhs loso loso, her knees are a bit soft, but it’s a super solid pass. Front aerial to split ring jump, back foot is meh. But again. SOLID. Transverse split jump half. Double tuck is a little low with the chest, but feet are planted. 13.466 (5.6, 7.866)

12:22 pm. Giorgia Villa, Italy, UB: Nice handstand before the Chow to Tkachev to Pak, leg separation there. Short handstand before the Maloney to Bhardwaj, gets it!! Good van Leeuwen. Blind change to front full, can’t get it all the way back up and over the bar so she has to hop off. Full-in with a small hop. Again, compared to yesterday, that was fantastic. Shame about the fall. 12.766 (5.8, 6.966)

12:20 pm. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, BB: Front aerial to straddle jump, solid. Side somi is also very nice. I think she had an acro skill before that which I missed. Switch leap to switch half, solid and clean. Super clean bhs loso. Great double pike! She’s like hi I’m single-handedly going to get Japan an individual spot. 13.400 (5.5, 7.900)

12:19 pm. Morgan Hurd, United States, UB: Chow to stalder full to piked Tkachev, nice! Downie to Pak, excellent. Ray back up to the high bar. Toe half to blind half, toe full to full-in with a tiny hop. A QUEEN! The Downie could be a little higher if we want to get picky, but she’ll get there. Overall that was an attack. Really just little things. 14.100 (6.0, 8.100)

12:14 pm. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, UB: Van Leeuwen, slight leg form, blind change to piked Jaeger, a bit far and she doesn’t even get her hands to the bar…just a flat-out fall, sadly. Blind change to piked Jaeger, gets it this time! Good on the Pak, toe shoot, a little muscly on the handstand before the blind full, blind change with slight leg separation into a clean double front, just a small step. 11.366 (4.7, 6.666)

12:12 pm. Ellie Black, Canada, UB: Great handstand before the Maloney to Hindorff, Shang, some leg separation but not bad. Blind change to piked Jaeger to Pak, a little slow into the Pak so the form is a little weak, but she gets it. Van Leeuwen, some leg form. Blind full, then toe front half with a tiny hop. 13.800 (5.9, 7.900)

12:10 pm. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, BB: Bhs bhs layout, a bit piked with a wobble. Hit her leaps after that. full turn, slight check. Front aerial to split ring jump. Nice split leap to side aerial. Double full with ankles crossed, but overall a solid set! 13.133 (5.2, 7.933)

12:08 pm. Lorette Charpy, France, UB: She’s going again from the beginning! It looks like the bars were loose BEFORE she went I guess? So they had to fix that. I’m sure her ankles whacking them also threw them out a bit. Shaposh half, toe half to piked Jaeger, gets it! Short handstand before the Ray to Pak, a little rushed, but gets it. Good van Leeuwen. Toe full, slight arch with a little leg separation, into her double back dismount. YAY. 13.500 (5.5, 8.000)

12:06 pm. Georgia Godwin, Australia, BB: Hit her opening series, then a triple wolf turn, beautiful! Great side somi, then a bhs layout series, which I’d credit as a pike, but it was solid. Leap into her front aerial to straddle jump, super solid. Switch leap to split leap I think, then a flawless double wolf turn. Great double pike! This was fantastic. 13.233 (5.6, 7.633)

12:03 pm. Lorette Charpy, France, UB: Shaposh half, OG, toe half, completely SLAMMED her feet onto the low bar, oh god, that looked like it hurt and she’s grabbing her ankles with tears in her eyes. Is fine after a second, though, and back to chalking up while they fix the bars, which I’m pretty sure she broke LOL. Okay, they’re going to beam, and then going back to Lorette in a second.

12:01 pm. Sarah Voss, Germany, BB: Crowd was like WOAHHHHH OMG at her candle mount. God bless! Side aerial to layout stepout, excellent! Tour jeté half, great. Big wobble and hands down on her double spin, tries to stay on but can’t hold it. Switch leap to switch half. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, super solid. 2.5 dismount with a step. Well, she was lovely aside from the fall. 12.933 (5.7, 7.233)

11:58 am. Zhang Jin, China, UB: Immediate blind change to front giant to huge straddle Jaeger, looked like she had it at first, but then slips and has a hard fall onto her bum. Her face was like, TOTAL shock. Ugh. Handstand when she gets back on arches completely over, and she loses leg form, but gets the Pak. Maloney, flies off backwards. WTF. She seems just as stunned as I am, tbh. Her coach is literally like “calm tf down.” Back on again, good Maloney to Gienger, the crowd is REALLY behind her which makes me so happy. Toe full, and then hit the full-in very well. 10.333 (4.8, 5.533)

11:55 am. ROTATION 1 STANDINGS

1. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, 14.566
2. Morgan Hurd, United States, 14.333
3. Giorgia Villa, Italy, 14.300
4. Zhang Jin, China, 14.133
5. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, 13.866
6. Ellie Black, Canada, 13.733
7. Kayla DiCello, United States, 13.733
8. Sarah Voss, Germany, 13.466
9. Lorette Charpy, France, 13.433
10. Alba Petisco, Spain, 13.400
11. Georgia Godwin, Australia, 13.100
12. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, 11.100

11:53 am. Giorgia Villa, Italy, VT: DTY, MUCH better than yesterday…she’s soft in her hips and knees throughout, and a little lower than she can usually do these, but overall it’s fine given how rough training was for her. 14.300 (5.4, 8.900)

11:52 am. Hitomi Hatakeda, Japan, UB: Slightly short handstand before the inbar to toe full to toe-on to van Leeuwen, SUPER-glued legs. Inbar half to piked Jaeger, nice! Ricna, a little close, bail, slight arch, to stalder to Ray, she’s working it! Full-in with a tiny hop. YAY, and pretty sure there were some upgrades in there? 13.866 (5.7, 8.166)

11:51 am. Morgan Hurd, United States, VT: DTY, honestly just slight knee form in the second twist…the first twist looked fab! Goes a little off center as well, small hop. 14.333 (5.4, 8.933)

11:49 am. Diana Varinska, Ukraine, UB: Short handstand before the Chow to Pak to Maloney to clear hip full, arches way over and loses her leg form entirely, not a prayer to save it unfortunately. Too bad, the form on the Chow, Pak, and Maloney was lovely. Back on for her Tkachev to mixed grip into the Jaeger, which was a little weak in the foot form, but the crowd LOVED it. Came off on a handstand again after that sadly. Missed her foot on her toe full, just does a layout dismount. She’s like whatever y’all I’m going to Tokyo. 11.100 (5.3, 5.800)

11:48 am. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, VT: She fell on her final touch, so hopefully she can bust this out now. AND SHE DOES! Gorgeous DTY with just a slight hop in place. 14.566 (5.4, 9.166)

11:44 am. Ellie Black, Canada, VT: Handspring front layout full, the best it’s basically looked all week! Still a bit rough in the air and low on the landing, but keeps it upright. Takes a giant step back to hold it up and she looks relieved AF. About the best we could’ve expected based on how training went! 13.733 (5.4, 8.433, -0.1 ND)

11:43 am. Georgia Godwin, Australia, UB: Weiler to Weiler half arches it over but pulls it back into the Maloney to Pak to toe-on to van Leeuwen, just some leg form there. Blind change to piked Jaeger, good. Blind full, and a clean double pike, feet glued but she wiggles a bit to hold onto it. 13.100 (5.4, 7.700)

11:41 am. Lorette Charpy, France, VT: FTY, super clean, pikes down a little early than she wants to, but pretty solid on the landing otherwise. Small hop. 13.433 (4.6, 8.833)

11:40 am. Sarah Voss, Germany, UB: Stalder half to piked Jaeger, excellent. Church to Pak, beautiful!! Good van Leeuwen as well. Toe full, a little rushed with her form but nice handstand position, into a clean Gienger, then her crazy handstand straight into a back tuck dismount, stumbles back out of it. She struggled this morning too, so this was a nice effort! 13.466 (5.4, 7.700)

11:39 am. Zhang Jin, China, VT: Tsuk double, pretty piked and the leg form is a bit rough but she gets the landing! 14.133 (5.6, 8.533)

11:38 am. Kayla DiCello, United States, UB: Short handstand before the stalder full, but THAT was nice, right to Maloney to Tkachev, gets it no problem! Blind change to piked Jaeger, gets that too! Told ya she’d get it together. Pak has some leg separation, but fine on the catch. Clean van Leeuwen. Toe-on, stuck the full-in. After that touch warm-up this was GOLD. 13.733 (5.6, 8.133)

11:37 am. Alba Petisco, Spain, VT: FTY, pretty clean in the air, just a hop back. 13.400 (4.6, 8.800)

11:36 am. Should be getting started any second now!

11:34 am. Zhang Jin got her tsuk double around, a good FTY from Lorette Charpy, and here comes Ellie Black with a handspring front layout full, struggled a bit with this yesterday in training and today…ugh, crashed it. Hopefully she’ll stand it up in the competition, or just make a last-minute decision to do the half.

11:31 am. Touch warm-up time! Kayla DiCello struggling a bit with her releases…just missed both of them AND her Pak, weird after an overall solid pre-meet warm-up. Nerves. I think she’ll be fine in the actual competition.

11:29 am. The athletes have marched OUT, the anthem is OVER, and we’re ready to BEGIN!

  1. Lol I love this crowd, pretty sure most of the people are Bucks (basketball) ticket holders. I was on the elevator and asked if anyone had any predictions and they asked me who was competing hahaha

  2. Lorette’s fall was due to a malfunction on bars. The apparatus just gave up while she was on handstand. Looked scary

  5. Morgan added 0.1 in difficulty (on floor) compared to day 2 in last year’s u.s. championships, all other events were scored exactly the same as here.

    So where are the upgrades?

      • Can you explain this more? Tim said some one element originally had a connection that was taken out, then at the end of the routine he said that she didn’t have to do a more difficult mount, but she did anyway. I assumed that meant the reason why the difficulty was exactly the same as last year is because the changes balanced it out. Are you saying the max value was just wrong and no one cared to inquire? Or she made a known error that brought it down?

I thought one of the benefits of taking international assignments was to verify difficulty scores.

  6. Really happy for Hitomi. With Asuka out and Mai coming back from Japanese gymnastics jail, Hitomi’s gonna be an important member if Japan hopes to contend at the Olympics.
