The 2019 Oklahoma vs UCLA Live Blog

Welcome to the live blog for the No. 2 UCLA Bruins at the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma!

2:38 pm. As it stands, Oklahoma gets the win with a 197.775 to UCLA’s 197.575 which seems like one of the most accurately-scored “big” meets of the season. There were one or two “that was a little too high” moments for both teams but overall that was truly solid work from the judges. RARE. UCLA getting the higher scores on beam and floor was correct, and Oklahoma winning the meet was correct.

Kyla Ross takes the all-around with a 39.850, Kyla Ross wins vault and bars with a pair of 10s, Maggie Nichols wins beam with a 9.975, and Katelyn Ohashi wins floor with a 10.

2:37 pm. Olivia Trautman, Oklahoma, FX: Huge double layout, excellent landing. Front layout front full to split jump, good work there. Double tuck, super high chest. Lunge back. Fantastic routine. 9.95

2:35 pm. Katelyn Ohashi, UCLA, BB: Front aerial to front aerial to bhs, fantastic!?! Her music right now is Katy Perry’s “Rise” which is my “first song at the gym” music. Nothing is more inspiration. Great on her leap series. Bhs loso to stuck layout full, excellent. 9.950

2:33 pm. Brenna Dowell, Oklahoma, FX: Dowell, overrotates it because SHE’S BRENNA and has too much power at all times, steps forward onto the line but doesn’t go OOB. 1.5 to perfect front layout, that was fab. Front layout front full to stag jump, excellent. QUEEN! 9.925

2:31 pm. Kyla Ross, UCLA, BB: Gorgeous bhs loso. Front aerial to sissone is excellent. Love her full turn SO MUCH. Switch leap to split jump, perfect okay?! Side aerial to layout full, slides one foot back. 9.875

2:29 pm. Jade Degouveia, Oklahoma, FX: Front double full, pretty clean! Front layout to front full, loses some of the leg form there, but good landing. 1.5 to front layout into a controlled lunge. 9.9

2:28 pm. Norah Flatley, UCLA, BB: Front aerial to loso, excellent. Side aerial, break at the hips, fought through it. Great full L turn right into the split jump to beat jump. Rudi dismount, not the best, and a hop on the landing, but still a decent set. 9.825

2:26 pm. Emma LaPinta, Oklahoma, FX: Triple full, solid! I wasn’t playing super close attention to her leg form though. Front full to front layout, steps into a lunge. Excellent double tuck!! That was gorgeous! “KJ just leapt off the ground” HAHAHAHA. Yes. Yes she did. Yeah, they showed her triple in the replay and her leg form is nuts, almost Aliya levels of crazy. 9.875

2:24 pm. Madison Kocian, UCLA, BB: Bhs loso, break at the hips. Front aerial wobble into the split jump. Switch leap to split jump looked nice. 1.5, her hip form is pretty weak weirdly? But good on the landing. 9.825

2:22 pm. Jordan Draper, Oklahoma, FX: I just hope she hits today tbh. Whip half to Rudi, some leg form in there but good on the landing. Front full to front layout, good there. Switch to switch full, good work! I wouldn’t go into the 9.9s but this is OU at home so they might. Yup. 9.9.

2:21 pm. Brielle Nguyen, UCLA, BB: Front aerial to loso, wobbled on both, pause between the two. Full turn is nice. Transverse split jump half, not bad. Front full is solid! 9.775

2:19 pm.Β Anastasia Webb, Oklahoma, FX: Hit her first pass and then a 1.5 to front full well. Lovely Rudi to finish. Beautiful routine! 9.9

2:17 pm. Grace Glenn, UCLA, BB: Super solid bhs loso. Switch leap to split jump, her extension is GOOOOORG. Dear LAWD. Nice full turn. Stuck gainer full. Lovely start! 9.9

2:09 pm. Oklahoma and UCLA are TIED going into the final rotation, 148.200 to 148.200, because OF COURSE THEY ARE.

2:07 pm. Katelyn Ohashi, UCLA, FX: Split leg double layout, excellent landing. 1.5 to barani to split jump to front tuck. Fab. Front full to barani down into the split. DEAD. 10.0!!!

2:05 pm. Maggie Nichols, Oklahoma, BB: Front aerial to split jump, not quite at 180, bhs loso with slightly flexed feet that are especially noticeable in the loso, good full turn. Good leap series. 1.5 stuck with feet apart. Excellent. 9.975

Living for these THE FORCE IS FEMALE shirts both teams are wearing while “Fight Song” plays, I’m gonna cry!!!!!!!

2:03 pm. Felicia Hano, UCLA, FX: Double layout, the tiniest bit forward with her chest, controlled lunge. Front full to barani to running man. Good double pike, just waves her arms around for some balance. 9.925

2:01 pm. Anastasia Webb, Oklahoma, BB: Little adjustment on bhs loso, good cover. Leap to front aerial, nice. Switch to split leap. Side aerial to stuck layout full, beautiful. Really just that first adjustment! 9.85

1:59 pm. Kyla Ross, UCLA, FX: Here for a 10, here for a 40. Whip to double tuck, nice chest position, controlled lunge back. Clean 1.5 to front layout. Tour jetΓ© full to straddle full I think, great. OMG SHE JUST PLAYED TO THE CAMERA I’M SOBBING YOU’RE SO GROWN UP NOW AND NOT A ROBOT MACHINE. EXCELLENT DOUBLE PIKE. 9.975 RUDE!!!!!!!

1:56 pm. Carly Woodard, Oklahoma, BB: Clean full turn. Side aerial to back handspring, off-line, stumbles, and falls. It’s so weird that beam has consistently been Oklahoma’s weakest this year when it should be their best. I guess today is especially off with Olivia Trautman out of the lineup. Front aerial, switch to split jump, side aerial into a layout full dismount, break at the hips and a bit of a wobble but her feet don’t move. 9.275

1:54 pm. Pauline Tratz, UCLA, FX: “This is more an experience than a routine.” Tucked full-in, chest pretty low with a lunge forward. 1.5 to front full, some leg form. Switch ring was excellent. High double tuck, step back, her best pass I think but all of her tumbling was slightly off here. 9.85

1:52 pm. Evy Schoepfer, Oklahoma, BB: Bhs bhs loso, great!! Switch leap to straddle side, not at 180 and has flexed feet, big bobble there as well. Good full turn. 1.5 with some soft knee form and a step back. 9.75

1:50 pm. Gracie Kramer, UCLA, FX: God her facial expressions are so on point. Front double full to front pike, excellent. She puts so much energy into every single movement. The FLOATIEST 1.5 ever into a front layout. Straddle jumps could be a LITTLE stronger, Rudi into her hero jump, this was superb. 9.925

1:49 pm. Nicole Lehrmann, Oklahoma, BB: Nice mount sequence and full turn to start. Solid bhs loso. Front aerial to beat jump, superb. Excellent cat leap to switch side. Gainer full, tiny bounce with one foot. 9.875

1:46 pm. Margzetta Frazier, UCLA, FX: Tucked full-in, stuck on her heels! Pretty solid on her jumps. Whip to double tuck, controlled lunge. Love the choreo into the corner before her third pass, a double pike, knees the tiniest bit buckled but her chest positions have been fantastic in this routine. I always think she’s gonna be a little low but she’s right where she needs to be. 9.825

1:44 pm.Β Brenna Dowell, Oklahoma, BB: So happy she has worked her way into this lineup regularly. Front aerial with a tiny check into a back handspring but she still makes the connection easily. Switch leap to split leap, solid. Good full turn. Kochetkova is crooked, wobbles a bit but brings it back into the beat jump. Front full with a little bounce. Fought through lots of nerves there, and probably her weakest of the season, but good fight. 9.75

1:41 pm. The largest OU crowd ever! And it includes Nadia Comaneci. Bart’s freaking out omg it’s adorable.

1:40 pm. Katelyn Ohashi fluff!

1:38 pm. A pretty weak vault rotation for UCLA compared to the Sooners in terms of landings and form, so Oklahoma is able to extend its lead, now 99.000 to UCLA’s 98.525…but UCLA has floor next and that’s gonna be big.

“We’re not STELLAR right now,” Miss Val says. “Against a team like this, we need to be stellar, and we’re not.”

1:37 pm. Maggie Nichols, Oklahoma, UB: Beautiful Ray to Pak. Hard to see handstand angle before toe-on to van Leeuwen, but that series was lovely, stuck double layout with her feet apart. Gorgeous. 9.925

1:36 pm. Pauline Tratz, UCLA, VT: FTY, lovely and flared, just pikes down a tiny bit and hops back slightly. 9.775

1:35 pm Nicole Lehrmann, Oklahoma, UB: Okay I was screaming about Kyla’s 10 on vault so I didn’t watch the beginning super close but she stuck her full-in cold and everything I did see was lovely. 9.925

1:34 pm. Kyla Ross, UCLA, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, big and stuck cold, a bit seated in her landing, though that was fab. 10.0!!!!!!!!

1:33 pm. Brenna Dowell, Oklahoma,Β UB: Big Ray, excellent. Toe-on to bail, nice. GOOOOORGEOUS stuck double layout, I’m screaming!!! BRENNA!!!!!!!!! 9.925

1:32 pm. Nia Dennis, UCLA, VT: Beautiful FTY, huuuuuge!Β  Gorgeous in the air. Bounces back about a foot or maybe a little more. 9.875

1:31 pm. Karrie Thomas, Oklahoma, UB: Nice handstand bfeore toe half to straddle Jaeger, bail is a little crooked, a tad short on the last handstand but not too much, double layout, stuck cold! A little bit of flex in her feet in the air but her layout body line is perf. 9.925

1:30 pm. Sekai Wright, UCLA, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, knee form in the air is weak but much better than last week. Lunges forward out of it. 9.725

1:29 pm. Alexandra Marks, Oklahoma, UB: Toe-on to Maloney to bail, hard to see from this angle, maybe a little short though? Stuck lovely half-in half-out with her feet apart. 9.875

1:28 pm. Felicia Hano, UCLA, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, big hop forward. Huge vault though, and she’s pretty solid in the air. 9.825

1:27 pm. Anastasia Webb, Oklahoma, UB: Lovely handstand before HUGE Pak. Great handstand before van Leeuwen, toe half is a tad late, double front half-out, not as controlled as last week, step back and some little form breaks in the air. 9.825

1:26 pm. Gracie Kramer, UCLA, VT: FTY, tiny ankle separation in the air, solid landing and it’s a pretty huge vault. 9.75

1:24 pm. Warmups for rotation two are just wrapping up!

1:19 pm. Oklahoma leads 49.425 to UCLA’s 49.300! Scoring has actually been pretty on point? I haven’t seen a single “wtf” score.

1:18 pm. Kyla Ross, UCLA, UB:Β Perfect handstand before Maloney to bail to toe shoot, flawless. Superb double layout. Yeah, that’s deduction-less. And it is!! 10.0!

1:17 pm. Brenna Dowell, Oklahoma, VT: Huuuge and gorgeous Yurchenko 1.5! Didn’t stick but her landing was still better than Degouveia’s, who DID stick. Her hop is just six inches at most, really excellent. 9.9

1:16 pm. Madison Kocian, UCLA, UB:Β Chow to Pak, tiniest ankle separation, arched handstand a lot before going back up to the high bar, full-in with her usual form issues, hop back. Not one of her stronger routines but still beautiful in some moments. 9.825

1:15 pm. Olivia Trautman, Oklahoma, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, hard to see how big it was from this angle but she had a hop forward. Show another angle, yo? Yeah, in the replay it looks good distance-wise, but her leg form is also a lot weaker from this angle.

1:14 pm. Norah Flatley, UCLA, UB: Blind change to straddle Jaeger, very nice! Toe-on a little late to bail, solid, short handstand before giants to double layout, stuck cold! Beautiful. 9.875

1:13 pm. Allie Stern, Oklahoma, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, comes in a tiny bit low and loose, hop forward. Not as big as the last vault we saw either.

1:12 pm. Macy Toronjo, UCLA, UB: Toe-on to Ray, nice, arched handstand before bail, short handstand before giants into double layout dismount, baby hop and she’s a little forward in her upper body. 9.8

1:11 pm. Jade Degouveia, Oklahoma, VT: Beautiful Yurchenko 1.5, a little low and long in that she gets HUGE distance but not a ton of height. But stuck cold and it’s pretty great in the air, just leg separation on pre-flight but who DOESN’T have that? 9.95

1:10 pm.Β Felicia Hano, UCLA, UB: Ray to bail, bail is a bit short and some leg separation but the release was great. Blind full a little late to double tuck, clean and stuck! 9.8

1:09 pm. Anastasia Webb, Oklahoma, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, some knee looseness in the air as she comes in for the landing, but good distance, hop forward/to the side. 9.85

1:08 pm. Margzetta Frazier, UCLA, UB: Maloney with slight leg sep to Pak with leg sep as well. A little piked in her hips on the handstand before her great van Leeuwen, double layout, one foot slides back slightly. 9.8

1:07 pm. Nicole Lehrmann, Oklahoma, VT: Huge Yurchenko 1.5, tiniest hop forward. 9.875

No vault for Maggie Nichols today, FYI. Smart. Not worth risking her for a meet like this because while exciting, it’s not like it’s postseason or anything.

1:06 pm. Aaaaand we’re back! They’re ALREADY TALKING ABOUT A PERFECT 40 HAHAHAHA I’m so excited.

1:04 pm. Little commercial break but everything should get started within the next three or so minutes!

1:03 pm. I think the sound is like one second delayed after the video which is gonna make this even more exciting when we hear screams before we see what nonsense is happening.

1:00 pm. WHO’S EXCITED FOR AT LEAST FORTY PERFECT TENS TODAY??? Get your wine IVs in and your sunglasses on because it’s time to ignore any semblance of whatever “code of points” exists and determine this meet based on nothing but feelings.

  1. My dream is to see an NCAA meet scored by Spencer and Lauren. Spencer is so harsh, the highest theoretical score I think he’s ever given a routine is 9.95, he thinks almost nothing is a 10. And then Lauren is so nice, not out of touch with reality like the Carol scored meets, but definitely a lot more forgiving of tiny errors that Spencer focuses more on. Love both of their blogs though, I’m not trying to shade either one of them.

    • I’m actually way more harsh than I am in here. πŸ˜‰ I just give my opinion based on what I think a routine will score. Most that I think will get 10s, I don’t think actually deserve them. But I also know NCAA judging well enough to know what they’re going to give to a certain routine. Using an actual code of points, my theoretical scores would be far lower than they are when I use the “NCAA Top 5 Teams code of points.”
