Around the Gymternet: Never tell me the odds

“Ok so I’m definitely going to trials next year.” -Stephanie has made her decision. Who else is going in on a #gymnerd section with coordinated outfits?

Comp news

Pan American Games are happening. The U.S. women had a great day at the combined quals/team final at the Pan American Games, winning the team gold by over 10 points, followed by Canada in second and Brazil rounding out our color wheel

Riley McCusker, Kara Eaker, and Morgan Hurd were chosen to do the all-around, leaving questions about Leanne Wong, who outscored Hurd at Classic. Tom Forster said on Facebook that no one is injured, but that the lineup was chosen based on the best outcome for the team. The three AAers qualified in first, second, and fourth, respectively. McCusker will compete in every final but vault.

Ellie Black qualified to every final, including first on vault and third in the all-around. Flavia Saraiva qualified in fifth to the all-around and to the floor and beam finals despite a fall on the latter. Danusia Francis did her kickass beam dismount and qualified in third to that final. (Live blogs: sub 1, sub 2, sub 3)

Brazil won the men’s comp. In dude land, Brazil took the team gold, followed by the U.S. and Canada. Robert Neff qualified in first for the all-around, while Arthur Mariano had an equipment malfunction on the high bar and got a redo, qualifying him in second. (Live blogs: sub 1, sub 2)

The competition for both men and women continues with the all-around today and event finals Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some other shit. It was cold. You had the choice between a bad English broadcast and one in Spanish. Riley had trouble with the medal detector. Jade Barbosa scared all of us in training, tweaking her knee. Toni-Ann Williams competed just five months out from an Achilles tear and with only six weeks of training.

European Youth Olympic Festival happened. Russia’s ladies dominated, taking home the team gold, and Victoria Listunova winning the all-around, vault, floor, and bars titles.

Looking ahead. Our lineup for U.S. nationals is here, y’all.

Wut else happened

Anna Li is being investigated. Anna Li, the 2012 Olympic alternate who replaced Terin Humphrey on USA Gymnastics’ athletes council, is being investigated for abuse along with her mother, according to the Orange County Register.

Li and her mother Jiani Wu have been accused of verbally and emotionally abusing young gymnasts at their gym, Legacy Elite Gymnastics. Li and Wu deny the allegations. Rachael Denhollander responded to the news on Twitter, saying “The problem of abuse is so ingrained, it’s difficult to find people who aren’t part of the problem.”

Sad news. Universal Gymnastics, Danell Leyva’s gym, is closing.

Star status

Upgrades. It’s 2004 and Chellsie Memmel is upgrading, y’all! (I spent a week in Texas and now I’m Texan, get over it.) Whittenburg also has a new skill on the high bar, and Sweden’s Jessica Castles says she’s upgrading absolutely everything.

Interviews. Max Whitlock is already looking ahead to 2024. Y’all.

Injuries. Nestor Abad maybe hurt his back, stay tuned.

NCAA corner

Upgrades. Lexy Ramler has some new tricks on bars, including a full-twisting Maloney and a Comaneci. Even Sunisa Lee was impressed.

Alaska might be in jeopardy. Fears are mounting that Alaska Anchorage’s gymnastics program could get cut.

Staying social

Classic follow up. Sounds like maybe people were pissed about Simone’s bedazzled leo? But like, why? Get a life. Also, Kohei stans.

Ready for Tokyo? We’re one year out from the 2020 Olympics and we have medals so Simone can plan her living room decor accordingly.

Never read the comments. Laurie did a Reddit AMA and then read the comments, forgetting the cardinal rule of interneting. We’re here for you, Laurie.

Last words

Guys, STOP. Stop FASTING, stop talking about keto whatever the FUCK that is, STOP what you’re doing, read this article NOW, and live your goddamn LIFE. /RANT
