11:21 pm. Ariana Orrego PER BB: Bhs loso, super solid. Full turn, good. Side somi, almost gets it right into the transverse split jump half! Side aerial, switch leap to switch half, a slightly low back leg on both from this angle. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, great. PERU THO. She and Sandra are crushing it. 1.5 stuck OH MY GOODNESS.

Morgan with a 14.250 on bars and a 54.950 AA.

11:20 pm. Morgan Hurd USA UB: Inbar to Komova II to blind full to Tkachev, great. Ricna to Pak, also excellent, arches over a bit before her Ray back up to high, Slava could sense it before she did it and he did a little body wave, bless. Inbar half to front giant half, toe full right on the bar to a full-in with a bit of a college stick. Fantastic.

11:19 pm. Riley gets a 14.900 on bars to lead the all-around with a 57.050!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

11:18 pm. Still waiting on Ariana Orrego’s beam but I think she’s up next.

11:16 pm. Riley McCusker USA UB: Stalder full to Maloney to Tkachev, nice. Ricna, floaty, to Pak to Chow half, excellent. Great handstand before her toe-on, blind change to front giant to half-in to double tuck, stuck. UHHHH OKAY MISS RILEY. Really my only complaint is the leg form on the half-in on her dismount.

11:15 pm. FINALLY a bars score for Leanne, 14.250! Highest so far. 5.9 D.

11:14 pm. Heika Del Sol Salas CRC VT: A bit short on her Yurchenko layout, stumbles it forward to the table. OOF, almost hits her head on the table actually.

11:12 pm. Leanne Wong looking happy again while waiting for her score. A good day for GAGE! Super long wait for her to get this number in, though. Some competed almost five minutes ago. Like, are y’all okay over there, judges?

11:11 pm. WOOOO, a 13.800 for Flavia to get her to a 54.000 all-around! Currently third behind Kara Eaker and Ellie Black.

11:10 pm. Flavia Saraiva BRA FX: Double layout, lots of leg separation, switch full, tucked full-in, good on both of those. Switch ring to tour jeté full, great. 1.5 to front full, steps out of it in a controlled manner. Random switch leap into the corner before her last pass. I love her so much. Finishes with a double pike, step back. Fantastic. Should be much more than enough for Brazil to get bronze, though they won’t touch Canada.

11:09 pm. Leanne Wong USA UB: Inbar to Komova II to Pak to Chow half, great! Inbar half to straddle JAeger, Al Fong is FREAKING OUT LOL. Toe full, gets a little stuck halfway through but good fight, double layout clean with a step forward. Doesn’t look thrilled with it, but it really was a great cover.

11:07 pm. Thais Fidelis with a 13.300 on floor to finish up with a 52.000!

Luciana Alvarado 48.800

11:06 pm. Thais Fidelis BRA FX: I wasn’t typing during any of this, but she hit all of her passes super well!

Kara Eaker finishes with a 13.800 on bars and a 56.700 AA!

11:03 pm. Sandra Collantes PER BB: Bhs loso, great. Punch front, solid. Big wobble on her jump series but shakes it off and it’s not a huge issue. Side aerial. Split jump to wolf jump, check with her hips there. Switch side. 1.5 with a tiny hop forward. 11.700

Carolyne Pedro 51.350 AA! Imagine if she could do beam!? Sandra Collantes with a 50.525, AMAZING?!?!?! Her first elite meet since 2013!!!

11:01 pm. Carolyne Pedro BRA FX: Arabian double front, little run forward out of it. Tucked full-in, more little steps back. Switch ring to tour jeté half. One part of her choreo looks like she’s injured and has to stop her routine LOL. It’s the worst choreo. She’s like this is where I die and take a breath for 5 seconds. Hit the last pass. Good for her, this was overall a really solid day for her.

10:59 pm. Three-event team scores going into the final rotation!

1. United States 127.600
2. Canada 120.500
3. Brazil 118.650
4. Argentina 117.000
5. Cuba 115.500
6. Peru 113.125
7. Chile 109.600
8. Mexico 108.125
9. Puerto Rico 105.100

10:54 pm. Carolyne Pedro BRA BB: Hit her leap mount into a leap series, maybe a little tentative on the switch half. Wobbled on a transverse jump after that. Solid on the bhs loso. Overrotates the full turn, check, punch front with a little hop forward, front aerial, wobble. If Carolyne is going to be the one to save this beam rotation I’ll die. Standing back tuck, little scoot back. Sissone to wolf jump. Double tuck, cowboyed with a hop back. WELL CAROLYNE HIT BEAM. 11.950, but basically a fall

10:53 pm. 12.900 for Flavia on beam. Could’ve been worse.

10:52 pm. Ariana Orrego had a 12.000 on bars, btw. I didn’t see the routine but she hit!

10:49 pm. Flavia Saraiva BRA BB: Back handspring mount to split jump to Korbut, brilliant. Roundoff layout, a little crooked but gets it. Full turn, switch leap to sissone, bhs loso loso, underrotated and she falls. BRAZIL WHY DO YOU DO THIS. Switch ring, that was actually FANTASTIC from this angle. One of the better switch rings I’ve seen on beam. Front aerial to split ring jump. WOAH, almost misses her foot on her side somi but slides it back. Another ring leap. Double pike, a little meh but not too bad.

10:47 pm. I haven’t seen any beam scores come up for Brazil…I think we’re waiting for Thais’ score now, she was the leadoff. Long ass wait. Oh, here it is, 12.200.

Right now for the all-around race, Kara leads with a 42.900 and Riley has a 42.150.

10:45 pm. Looks like Aleah Finnegan got a 14.700 for her DTY!!! Also did her second vault, Omelianchik I think, which got a 13.550. She’s currently sitting fourth into the vault final,  just a quarter of a tenth back from third and half a tenth back from second.

10:44 pm. Thais Fidelis BRA BB: Off on her flight series. Switch to switch half to straddle jump, low in pretty much all of those though I think the straddle was the weakest. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, nice. Wolf jump to sissone. Very nice there. Side aerial, she keeps one arm SO extended she practically touches the beam. Punch front, leg up, wobble, good fight. Dismounts with a double pike, little bounce in place.

10:43 pm. Sandra Collantes PER UB: I wasn’t typing for the start of this but she caught a Jaeger and hit her double layout dismount, hit routine! 12.575

10:42 pm. Morgan Hurd USA VT: DTY, she crashed one in the touch, was reaaaaaaly all the way to the side on the table, holy crap, that was close to missing a hand. But still got the block to get it around and she was just a little short. 14.300

10:41 pm. Fabiola Diaz PER UB: Blind full, blind change to straddle Jaeger, just some leg separation in the handstand. Bail, legs come apart, to toe shoot, OOF, double layout, flies forward to her hands and somersaults out of it. Too bad, great until that point.

10:38 pm. Riley McCusker USA VT: DTY, legs come apart a bit in the air, and she lands it really low. The first twist was pretty great but she really just doesn’t have the power for this vault. Though she obviously needs it to be a competitive all-arounder. 13.850

Luciana Alvarado 11.950 FX

10:36 pm. Kara Eaker USA VT: Yurchenko 1.5, tucked a bit in her knees at the end but the first half of the post-flight was one of her best attempts I’ve seen in terms of extension, and she almost stuck it cold. 14.200

10:31 pm. For this rotation, the U.S. now has an 84.400, and then Brazil comes up just behind them with an 81.600, while Peru has a 77.350. The U.S. could fully go 170+ which I wasn’t fully expecting but they’re like hiiiiii we’re queens.

10:28 pm. Diana Vasquez BOL BB: Side aerial, switch leap to a split jump, pretty good bhs loso! Way short on her transverse split jump half, both in the split and getting it around. Switch side is also a bit janky. Hit her layout full dismount. A little rough here and there but she had some nice skills!

10:23 pm. Riley McCusker USA FX: Tucked full-in is great. Punches into the front double full to punch front to stag, great. Beautiful split full. Double pike is fab. Triple wolf turn, she is the most consistently controlled on these shameful turns. She is allowed to do them. Switch ring to switch full. Bounce back on the double tuck. Fab. She’s actually a queen.

14.050 I’M SCREAMING lemme hear your whiny chorus of “she’s sooooo overscored” post-Classics again tho. Her mom literally just did the sign of the cross. same.

10:19 pm. Kara Eaker FX: Front double full, slightly short with a small hop back. Triple full, basically overrotates it a bit! Hop to the side. GOD her split in her Memmel turn is GORGEOUS. 2.5 to front full, stuck cold. Fantastic leaps. Good double pike to finish. Brilliant. So glad they let her do all-around. 13.850!

10:17 pm. Carolyne Pedro with a 13.150 on bars! Brazil is GETTING IT DONE.

10:15 pm. Morgan Hurd USA FX: Big double layout, steps back out of it. Front double full into choreography, great. Good leap series. Double tuck, a little bit short, just kind of bobbles for a second on one foot to fix her landing. Finishes with a double pike with a bounce back. Mostly great! Just that third pass. 13.300

10:14 pm. Flavia Saraiva BRA UB: Replay! Piked Jaeger to Pak, some leg separation. Toe-on to Maloney, good, Tkachev, a tiny bit low, not bad. Toe full, fine, blind change, a tiny bit crooked, to front giant to clean double tuck. Idk what Lorrane’s face was all about. That was fine I think? For her. 12.800

10:13 pm. They just showed Lorrane making an “EEEEEE” face during someone on bars so hopefully nothing too rough happened. Looks like it was Flavia Saraiva who was just up.

Still waiting for Aleah Finnegan’s score…

10:10 pm. Lorrane Oliveira BRA UB: Maloney, nice lift, to Pak to van Leeuwen, lovely. Toe-on to blind change to front giant full to piked Jaeger, got a little jerky in there but covered up any mistakes pretty well. She has bent elbows in several of her blind changes, and was late on some handstands, but hits the double front, a little cowboyed with a step. Good fight. 14.000!!! Damn.

Sandra Collantes 13.700 VT! Peru is BRINGING IT. Luciana Alvarado 12.150 BB.

10:09 pm. Ariana Orrego 13.700 VT!

Thais Fidelis 12.950 UB, Fabiola Diaz 13.300 VT, Maria Arauz 9.550 BB

10:08 pm. Aleah Finnegan USA FX: Had a weird music issue at the start. GAGE PROBLEMS. Double double, opens up SO early. Hop back. Arabian double front, the first flip was very clean but the second was a teeny tiny bit cowboyed, into a stag, a little wild on that landing. Switch ring half. Clean double spin. 2.5 to front layout, excellent there! Switch ring to tour jeté half. Front handspring to front double full, lands it a bit awkwardly and has to take a step over. 13.750

10:07 pm. Fabiola Diaz PER VT: FTY with a hop back.

10:06 pm. Some touch warmup stuff, just wrapping up now so we should be back any second.

I just zoomed over to my preview and roster to see if anyone expected to compete is missing today and saw the photo of the U.S. team and realized that almost the entire team is Asian. 80%. Incredible. #RepresentationMatters Imagine if Sunisa had made it over Riley?! But this is amazing.

10:01 pm. The United States leads with a 42.750 ON BEAM I’m shook, Brazil with a 41.500 after vault, and Peru with a 36.550 after a fantastic floor rotation.

10:00 pm. Pierina Cedres URU UB: Blind change to front giant (leg sep) to straddle Jaeger, just small form things in that release, overall good. Shootover, toe-on to toe shoot, a little close, short handstand before a blind full, giants into a double pike, nice air on that, a couple of small steps back. Good! 10.700

Heika Del Sol Salas 12.700 UB, Luciana Alvarado 11.350 UB, both of Costa Rica.

9:59 pm. 14.850 FOR KARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT A BEAM ROTATION. 6.4 D. I’m saved.

9:58 pm. Paola Barahona ESA UB: Good straddle Jaeger, Pak, some leg separation, toe-on to toe shoot, a little close there, blind full is a little late, good double tuck with a step back. Good work. 11.025

9:56 pm. Would it be okay if I just sob for the next 45 minutes at Kara’s routine?

9:54 pm. Kara Eaker USA BB: Switch leap mount, then a split ring leap, the angle looked a little bonkers. Overrotates her full Y turn a bit but great save. Front aerial to split ring jump to back handspring, right into a little skippy choreo. Beautiful. Side aerial loso loso, no problems at all, just kinda adjusts her hips. Split leap to side somi, brilliant. She started out this routine a little nervous but as she works through it she just keeps getting better. Ring leap, Korbut, not connected. She had a slight adjustment on the leap. Switch leap to switch side. Dismounts with a 2.5 almost stuck. DAAAAAAMN KARA.

9:53 pm. Dayuuum, 14.250 for Riley on beam even with her little mistakes! 5.9 D. Fab. She’s a queen.

Luciana Alvarado 11.350 UB

9:52 pm. Ariana Orrego PER FX: Tucked full-in, slight hop back. She’s such a star for this program. Double tuck, little slide back. Switch ring through to a switch half to Popa, excellent series. 1.5 to barani, a little crooked in her line, but gets it. Stuck the double pike at the end. FANTASTIC! 12.750

9:51 pm. Some more scores…Maria Arauz 9.750 UB, Diana Vasquez 9.350 UB. Both from Bolivia.

9:48 pm. Riley McCusker USA BB: “Ree-lay Mc-Coo-sker.” Same. Triple wolf turn, perfect. Double wolf turn, also basically perfect. Split leap, pause, front aerial to straddle jump, a little low and hips angled to the side on that, but good cover. Hits the bhs bhs layout with a tiny bounce in place. Just slight leg sep in the layout. Switch leap to switch half to Korbut, great. Side aerial, wobble. Double tuck, a little low and forward, pulls her chest back and slides into a lunge.

Leanne Wong with a 13.650 on beam!! Takes the lead by half a point.

9:47 pm. Still waiting on more beam scores…or just, you know, anything that’s happening over there.

9:45 pm. Sandra Collantes PER FX: Turked full-in to start, great. Switch ring to switch half, and then a Popa, just a slightly not-so-ringed leg in the ring leap. 1.5 to front full, lovely, steps out into her choreo. Goodness, NCAA does wonders for people. Double pike with a slight bounce back. Great routine. 12.550!

9:44 pm. Morgan Hurd with a 13.100 on beam, 5.3 D.

Vault went well for Brazil it seems, a 14.500 for Flavia in addition to a 13.550 from Thais Fidelis and a 13.450 from Carolyne Pedro. The start they needed!

9:42 pm. Flavia Saraiva BRA VT: Long wait for her but that’s been the way of things today on vault. Love this highlighter neon. DTY, actually really excellent for her! She’s got quite a bit more power, that looked fab. 14.500

9:41 pm. I’ll post updates when I see them re: U.S. scores even if we don’t get to see every routine.

9:40 pm. Fabiola Diaz PER FX: Double pike bounces back OOB. Double tuck is a little buckled. Handstand pirouette, old school! Nice split jump full. Switch ring to, oh lord, balked the leap out of the connection, just kind of stopped her run, and then did a half hearted jump. That was so weird. Missed her footing maybe? Hit the last pass. 11.250

Can see Morgan doing jumps in the background on beam for a sec. Looked clean.

9:39 pm. Be prepared to miss a LOT of the U.S.

9:37 pm. Touch right now, Riley’s wolf turning her face off, get it!

Oh yeah, this is also Sandra Collantes’ return to elite gymnastics since…at least 2013? 2012? I honestly can’t remember when we last saw her. Maybe even 2011 Pan Am Games?! Oh, I think she did South American Championships after that…but I mean, definitely her first elite meet in about 6+ years.

9:35 pm. And they’re out! Let the touch warm-ups begin, and then we’ll start with the competition shortly after.

An individual to watch out for is Paola Barahona of El Salvador. She trains with Okeri Katjivari and Quinn Skrupa in Canada, and this is her second time representing her home country!

9:34 pm. Still waiting on the athletes…

9:26 pm. Athletes are about to march out!

Just to recap the earlier sessions, Canada’s in a pretty solid lead right now and should take the silver, with Argentina next in line. Brazil will have to beat a 153.425 to get on the podium, which is definitely possible with this group of gymnasts, but they’re going three-up three-count on three of their four events, so it’s going to be a lot of pressure and they’re gonna have to be SUPER ON. A great day from them could be around a 158 or so, give or take a couple of points, so it’s possible for them to medal but again…pressure.

For the individual qualifications, Ellie Black currently has a lead of over two points in the all-around, and she also leads every event but beam, where she’s second. Martina Dominici and Danusia Francis also had excellent days, and Victoria-Kayen Woo edged out Brooklyn Moors to two-per-country her out of the all-around final.

Brazil starts on vault in the final subdivision starting any minute now, while the mixed group will compete on bars, the United States starts on beam, and host team Peru starts on floor.

  1. “the U.S. is outsourcing their coaches…” Wait does Bart actually not realize why all the dude coaches fled far, far away from USAG as it imploded? what is this broadcasttttt

  2. So Morgan will miss all the finals due to two per country noooooo. Her worlds spot is under threat, so I’m trusting her to win (by that I mean place second behind Simone) at nationals Morgi WE BELIEVE IN YOU.

      • I agree with Lauren don’t count her out. TBH Lauren I wouldn’t be surprised if the Worlds team is almost the same as last year but with different athletes competing different events. And yeah, Morgan is excellent at pacing herself, like Gabby was

        • Yeah, definitely! I have a feeling it’ll be Simone, Morgan, Riley, Kara, and then Grace or Leanne, but it’s going to be so hard to pick. I keep Morgan on the team knowing that she’s a pro at pacing and because she puts up solid routines on all four events generally pretty consistently, and I think we’ll continue to see her in that role going forward.

        • Uhh, guys, don’t forget about Jade? she has the second best VT and FX scores to Simone, and that’s hard to pass up! Grace really needs to beat Riley, Kara, and Leanne in the AA if she wants a non-alternate spot. Morgan, too, for that matter, unless she wins bars. UGH TOO MUCH DEPTH HAHA GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE 😉

        • I don’t think Jade should be considered for worlds, since worlds is basically a dress rehearsal for the Olympics and Jade won’t be part of the team for the Olympics. I think someone like Grace or Morgan is a better option than Jade on a worlds team because even if they don’t have QUITE as high scores on those two events, it doesn’t matter overall, they can contribute on more than just those two events if needed, and they’re actually in consideration for the Olympics next year. Sending Jade to worlds this year would be a waste, frankly. Nothing against her, but she chose her path and will almost certainly qualify to Tokyo as an individual, so she should focus on world cups and be left off of the Stuttgart team.

        • I am still rooting for skinner to surprise us all and make the team like brenna…lol… she could bring that vt and fx score they need in place of jade….

      • Morgan watered down her routines as opposed to Kara and Riley (except the double layout) who are operating closer to potential. That said, I was surprised that Morgan chose to go to Panams. I would have thought that, especially after Nationals, she would have wanted to focus more on getting her upgrades back in.

    • Wait, didn’t Morgan and Leanne tie on bars? How does the tie break work? (s.o.s. Lauren, thanks for entertaining my thoughts this evening! I’m not cool enough for twitter!)

      Like

      • No problem! The tie-break is on the E score. Morgan had a higher D than Leanne, but Leanne had a higher E…which I’m not quite sure makes sense because Leanne had a kind of big mistake? Then again, Morgan did arch over on the low bar. But either way, it’s on E score!
