    • The FIG are not the one to blame here. Romania currently has very little depth in both their senior and junior teams (I mean, the alternate for this team is Munteanu, who hasn’t even been training consistently) , the new seniors don’t manage to step up to the level that’s required to be contending for medals, Belu and Bitang come and go whenever it suits them and unlike teams like France and the Netherlands, they don’t manage to compensate their lack of difficulty with originality elsewhere. They deserved the harsh scores they received today, even the ones on floor. Hopefully this is a wake up call for them to step up their game. They can’t rely on their good reputation alone, not when other teams are taking advantage of their shortcomings.

      • I see your point, but we are talking about some specific performances like Iordache’s floor routine. That floor routine does nothing to do with the team’s depth.

Her floor exercise was not perfect, obviously. But do you really believe she deserved a 13.7ish? Really? I compare her performance with Glasgow’s from last year and I don’t see that much difference, in fact I think it was a little bit better. And her performance in Glasgow last year was around 14.6 if I recall correctly.

Yes, a wake up call. But I strongly believe IOrdache’s score on floor was dramatically underscored

      • @Santiago_ Ioardache was highly deducted for her landings and missing 2of her pirouetting moves. Furthermore, she highly downgraded her tumbling passes from last year’s 14.6 fx routine. I was surprised she didn’t throw her Silivas, since it was pretty ok in the warm up. I, too, am disappointed she won’t be in EF.

      • @ Santiago. The original comment I replied to seemed to talk more about Romania’s gymnastics in general. But yes, I do think she deserved the score she got. It was definitely harsh, harsher than judges typically are on the Romanian team, but like I said, a good reputation should not be depended on too much. The highest scores on FX for the day were 8.6 and 8.5 by Sae Miyazaki and Ksenia Afanasyeva. Other good routines by Amy Tinkler, Ellie Black, Asuka Teramoto scored around 8.2-8.4 and in my opinion, Iordache was significantly inferior to those performances. Unfinished and uncontrolled turns and leaps, leg separations, uncontrolled landings all add up. Also, even though quick choreography is her signature style, I think this year it’s hasty to the point where it almost becomes unpolished. Don’t get me wrong, I’m devastated for those girls, but it cannot be denied that they have been given the benefit of the doubt for a long time now.

  1. I`m in shock right now. Romania had a disastrous meet. Even Iordache, who´s usually a rock and who came back so strong after the injury with two falls… hope she gets it together for all-around finals…

  3. I really don’t understand Romania’s floor scores… I mean no one did their best, certainly, but it seems like they were really lowballed. I won’t pretend like I know enough about scoring but… Man. It seems so harsh and as longtime fan it just doesn’t make sense to me. I think the team seeing that they weren’t able to get one 14 was really negatively impacted for the rest of the meet (despite all of the injuries that negatively impacted them, I mean).

  4. Ugh…Romania and Larisa are breaking my heart! No team final, beam or floor final most likely for Larisa. She really had the goods to medal on both if she hit. 😫

  5. holy crap, look at the scores. That is some touch scoring right there. Was it really as bad as it looks (judging from the score) or did the judge have a rough day?

  6. Romania was scored very toughly on FX, but not unfairly. Look closely at Larisa’s routine, uncontrolled steps on landing, chest down, leg separations in the air, unfinished pirouettes etc. Sure, they may seem like minor, nitpicky reasons to receive such an E-mark, but all these small, sloppy errors do add up to become a major deduction in the final E-score. If this kind of scoring is applied consistently throughout qualifications, I don’t see the issue.

    • I’m in favor of the tight calls on execution if, and only if, they are applied consistently. If the judges score like this consistently, this might discourage gymnasts from sloppy attempts at difficult skills (Skinner comes to mind…).

      • Exactly, and even in less extreme examples than Skinner. Especially on floor, where the possibility of boosting the D-score with turns and jumps have lead to many gymnasts stumbling all over the place attempting to get quad turns and double Y turns around.

  7. They managed to do worst than last year somehow. This team total would have put them out of the top 8 last year… Romania to the test event?

  8. Not only is it looking like Romania isn’t going to qualify to the team finals, but also to no individual event finals either. And if Iordache performs in AA like she did today then no medal there. Despite their obvious issues and decline in quality over the last few years this is still mind boggling. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but the last time Romania finished with zero medals at a full Worlds was 1981, after lots of retirements and some defections, and even then the team came in fourth.

  9. Why did Iordache take out her double double? Has she been sick or injured?
Really sad she (likely) won’t make beam finals. I was hoping she’d earn a well deserved gold there.
