The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 separate states between the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan). In 1992, all of the former Soviet republics except Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania competed as part of the Unified Team, and beginning at the 1996 Olympic Games, all former Soviet states competed independently.
