Flavia Saraiva
It’s October! It’s WORLDS MONTH! We’re only three weeks away from qualifications, teams are being announced at a rapid-fire pace, and that means it’s time to take another look at where everyone stands now that we’re super close from the main event.
There weren’t a ton of changes to our list in September, as most of the top competitors were focusing on training and making their nations’ worlds teams rather than on putting out top-notch performances at big events, but we did see a few moves up the rankings for several gymnasts we can expect in Doha.
At Pan Ams, Grace McCallum had an all-around performance that moved her up to fourth-best in the world for 2018, and Flavia Saraiva put up beam and floor routines in the team final that skyrocketed her to the sixth and seventh best scores on these events, respectively. We also saw Marine Boyer reach the top ten beam D scores list with her 6.2 in Paris last weekend, and though neither Jade Carey or Fan Yilin will compete at worlds this year, both moved up the rankings on their top events, with Carey now fifth on vault and third on floor while Fan is now tenth on bars.
In 2018, we’ve seen 5,143 all-around performances, as well as 6,921 vault scores, 7,194 bars scores, 7,350 beam scores, and 7,165 floor scores, in addition to 1,778 two-vault attempts that get averaged for an event final (or qualification into a final).
Below, find a list of the top all-around and event scores thus far, as well as the top D scores for each event. An asterisk (*) next to the name denotes a junior competitor, and I’ve removed bonus from all domestic meets to keep things consistent. As a note, we only include juniors in the two-vault averages or D-score combos if they’re competing vaults from two different families, and if a competition uses bonuses but their score sheets don’t differentiate those bonuses from the totals, we don’t include those scores in our database.
As a reminder, this is just a fun way to track the top range of scores in the all-around and on each event. Obviously every meet is scored at a different standard and it’s impossible to compare from meet to meet, but calm down — it’s nothing serious. We’re not predicting the next Olympic champion or electing the next leader of the free world. It’s just easier this way to see a range of scores that could be the goal gymnasts will be trying to reach at bigger international competitions.

Great lists! Though I wonder if maybe you missed the All-Japan Senior Championships, where Asuka Teramoto scored 55.9 in the all-around and 15.1 on vault. Pretty nice scores!

Oh yes, that’s been on my list to add for weeks! They didn’t post the results right away and so I ignored it…thank you, I’ll add these!

It’s really messing with my mind to see Diana Varinska with a top four beam score but not top ten bars score.

I think it’s because (a) there’s SO much competition on bars this year, and (b) the Ukrainian home scores this year were INSANE (Angelina Radivilova got something like a 14.4 on both beam and floor which…no).

I am so not into this CoP… i always have to add +0,4 on vault; 0,5 on UB and FX; and 1,0 BB (lol)
I never know what is good now…

Exactly, I still can’t get over the fact that low fourteens are world class medal worthy routines. Used to have high 16s

We haven’t had 16’s since the 2006 to 08 era, and that was because the scoring system was completely different – I believe the top 10 elements made up the D score, but ever since 2009 it has been top 8. Also the way E scores were evaluated were far more generous during that quad, that E score generosity hasn’t been seen since 2008 either. Of course it’s been getting stricter little by little as quads go by – but it’s only been this quad beam E scores suddenly became crazy low. I would say that’s the biggest change we’ve had since 2009 in terms of scoring expectations. It’s been a decade since then and you’re not used to it yet? Obviously D scores are lower too – on vault, and the elimination of the D dismount requirement from the base D score makes the scores a bit lower. It’s only beam that’s seen a big change though in terms of evaluation(though floor is a bit strict too)

Correct, I meant HIGH 16’s.Though any 16 has been rare since 2008.

Ilyankova had a 6.3 on UB not 6.2. Melnikova had a 6.5 at stuttgart wc 2018 pls remove that

Iliankova hasn’t had a 6.3 this season. She got a 6.2 in Jesolo QFs and a 6.1 in Jesolo finals. She is reaching for a 6.3 routine and if you add up all of her skills with no missed connections, it’s a 6.3, but she hasn’t actually been awarded the 6.3.
At the Stuttgart world cup, Melnikova had a 5.4 VT, 5.7 UB, 5.5 BB, and 5.6 FX so I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I like how Lauren actually says “this is not a serious list” and straight away someone is PLEASE REMOVE THIS like it’s going to affect world standings or international gymnastical relations. Ugh.

LOLLLL and they weren’t even right so like…u ok
I think this person is the Russian stan who comments about the Russians being the best everywhere though.

Hold on. Do they think Angelina was actually credited with a 6.5 on beam with a fall on her whippy layout, missed connections and ring jumps with no actual ring position? In 2018? You clearly go by what the gymnast was officially credited with, not what their potential was.

LOL. Yup. She legit was awarded like a point less than what she was going for. If this was “Dream D Score Potential” sure, but literally no one is credited for absolutely everything.

Upon actually looking at the poster’s name this is absolutely a Russian stan/troll known as “rusgymqueen lesenkia” and “gowreesh nath” who constantly makes rude/racist/transphobic remarks on YouTube. It’s a shame they found your blog.

Could this be the year Melka gets her AA medal? Honestly, (after Biles) the podium looks to be between her, McCusker/Hurd, Murakami, MDJDS, and Ellie Black. It could be a super close fight for silver and bronze, and I welcome all likely outcomes.

Disappointed that GB hardly get on a list. I know they have been injury hit but shame no one else is stepping up. Not convinced they have a decent programme.

Well, to be fair, if GB had given some of its B team members some international experience, they may have been able to step up a little better. You can’t just use the same 4-6 veterans for everything and then expect girls with barely any international experience to be able to perform to A team standards in a major international. And for most countries, the next couple of years when world cups become part of qualifications, its going to be worse. Nobody is going to be sending untested new seniors to try to qualify spots for Tokyo.
