How does the scoring work?
LikeLike
Gymnasts go up against one another and whoever gets the higher score gets points – the points they get are determined by separation from the score they beat, so while I don’t remember the exact numbers here, someone with 1 point didn’t outscore their rival by too much, while someone with 5 points had a significant margin ahead (and I think 5 is the highest they can go). If they tie or fall below a one-tenth margin from each other, both athletes get a 0.
Looking at the scores off-hand, I think it’s something like
0 points – less than 1 tenth margin
1 point – 1-2 tenth margin
2 points – 3-5 tenth margin
3 points – 6-9 tenth margin
4 points – 1-2 point margin
5 points – more than 2 point margin
WAG doesn’t usually use this system in the regular Bundesliga season (they just use FIG scores) but MAG uses it for every meet, it’s kinda fun and I love the whole duel match aspect between athletes, it makes it really exciting for the teams. The strategy that goes into it is really interesting because whoever the first team in each round puts up, the second team going up will choose an athlete that makes sense to fight against the first – for example, if Team A puts up Elisabeth Seitz on bars and Team B’s highest-scoring bars athlete usually gets around a 13, Team B will either know they likely can’t beat her and just pick a weaker athlete to go up while saving the stronger athlete to hopefully beat someone else, or they’ll choose their strongest gymnast so even if they don’t win, they can still decrease the margin between the two.
The France Top 12 meets work similarly, except for each duel, the gymnast with the higher score gets 3 points and the gymnast with the lower score gets 1 point, regardless of what the scores are (and both get 2 points if there is an exact tie). With the values much lower in this system, the overall team scores end up being really close…with 12 total routines counting, if Team A wins every duel, the most they can get is 36 points, and if Team B loses every duel, they’ll still walk away with 12 points, so if a much stronger FIG-scoring team has a few falls, a weaker FIG-scoring team that hits can actually get a win, which is awesome. There have been a few Top 12 meets where the higher-scoring team actually had a lower overall FIG score, but with more duel wins, they can still end up taking the overall win.
