It’s time for the second week of NCAA gymnastics in the 2015 season! Got your Fantasy Gym lineups set?
This week is going to be a big one. We’ll ease our way in with Winona State competing at Alaska on Thursday night, and then Friday you’ll have 19 meets to choose from, including six featuring top ten teams. What could be better?
One of Friday’s biggest meets is #4 Alabama playing host to #21 Arizona. While it’s not the most challenging of meets for one of the SEC’s best, Bama often starts off a bit slow and this year, they’re without the legendary Sarah Patterson at the helm for the first time in 36 seasons. While Patterson did an excellent job building the program in a way that should allow for a smooth transition into the hands of former assistant Dana Duckworth (who also competed for Bama), coaching changes always throw an interesting dynamic into the mix. We’re excited for freshmen Mackenzie Brannan and Kiana Winston as well as the return of senior Kayla Williams, who missed the 2014 season after rupturing her Achilles during a warmup. On the Arizona side, senior Kristin Klarenbach was recently sidelined, which could throw a wrench into their floor lineup.
The other spotlight meet is #2 Oklahoma versus #13 Arkansas. Oklahoma is coming off of a national championship title, and they’re hungry for more. Sadly, they are without fan favorites Taylor Spears, Madison Mooring, and Lara Albright, all of whom wrapped up their careers last year. Now Rebecca Clark and Erica Brewer should take the reigns, and they’re welcoming one of the most exciting freshmen this year as Brenna Dowell makes her debut. Arkansas will be interesting without superstar Kat Grable, and they also lost promising all-around freshman Braie Speed to injury, so they’re going to need to be extra consistent if they want to break into the top ten this season.
Also on Friday are #3 LSU hosting Iowa, #10 Stanford traveling to San Jose State after a rough first week showing at UC Davis, #9 Nebraska hosting division II Lindenwood, and #6 Utah traveling to Brigham Young. These should all be easy contests for the higher-ranked teams, though San Jose State could pull out another upset against Stanford if the Cardinal can’t field full lineups on each event again.
On Saturday, #8 Michigan hosting #7 Georgia should be awesome. It’s easily the toughest challenge of the week, and these two teams have consistently been neck-in-neck over the past couple of seasons so expect a dramatic and close finish. Michigan welcomes a bundle of former elites into the pack, including Brianna Brown, Nichelle Christopherson, Lauren Marinez, and India McPeak, who represented Ireland at World Championships. Georgia, meanwhile, had a world class bar rotation in 2014 and should continue to excel there even though they’ve lost standouts Lindsey Cheek and Cat Hires. If everyone hits on both sides, this will be a very tough meet to call.
#1 Florida will travel to Ball State to break in the season nice and easy on Sunday. Mackenzie Caquatto and Alaina Johnson will be greatly missed in their lineups, but they’ve been replaced by equally phenomenal freshmen like former elites Kennedy Baker, Ericha Fassbender, and Grace McLaughlin in addition to L10 superstar Alex McMurtry. They’re absolutely stacked with talent, so expect nothing less than domination this weekend.
Finally, we get the one big conference meet on Monday when #11 Oregon State hosts #5 UCLA. Oregon State is interesting this year, as they recruited fierce Arizona State standout Risa Perez, now a junior, as well as sophomore Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, who is brilliantly talented yet found it difficult to break into Florida’s packed lineups as a freshman. They have some of the most interesting beam and floor routines as a whole, so they should be a great team to watch this year…and with UCLA’s consistency issues, could come out on top this weekend. UCLA lost two very important seniors (Olivia Courtney and Sydney Sawa), but they have Sam Peszek back (again!) as well as Peng-Peng Lee, who sat out her first two seasons with knee injuries. Add in some awesome sophomore and junior talent like Danusia Francis and Hallie Mossett, and throw in former Arizona standout Jordan Williams (who finished her undergrad career on a sad note with an injury but then came to UCLA for grad school where she was granted a red-shirt season), and it’s definitely a fantastic squad but whether they can actually hit when they need to is the question. Will 2015 finally be their comeback year? Or will Miss Val have a rage stroke mid-interview again? Only time will tell, though I think it’s looking like things are finally falling into place for the Bruins.

Just so you know – if you have Fox Sports Southwest, the Oklahoma game will be played at 7:00 PM Central Time.

Thanks for the great NCAA coverage? Are the NCAA transfer rules different for gymnasts than other athletes so that Silvia Colussi-Pelaez can compete for Oregon without sitting a year? I’m glad she can compete, her beam work is really original.
