Murakami and Hatakeda sisters are locks for Olympic team IMO.
Ui Soma made things interesting for sure. Teramoto still has time to improve, but this was not a good result for her, but they might need her for UB.

As long as Teramoto brings back the Rudi she will be OK. No one else in Japan can bring that vault/bars combo now.

I wouldn’t count Yuna out either, she tied Hitomi’s score in the AA final, it’s just her low qualification score that got her, and she beat out most of the top AAs on beam. If she’s as consistent there as she seems to be, she could potentially be for Japan what Laurie Hernandez was for the US in 2016, someone who primarily makes the team for beam but can also fill in other spots in the team final as needed (certainly floor at least).

Yeah, Yuna absolutely can get into the mix if she can just hit bars! It’s a nervy event for her but she’s fine when she hits and she’s more than proving herself on beam and floor…and she also has a DTY that she didn’t do here. I feel like she’s going to be a consistent top 4 AAer with her DTY in the mix if she’s hitting bars.
Japan selects its teams not based on any puzzle, but based on ranking, so we can talk about who fits the teams best and who they ‘need’ until the cows come home…but the team would be Mai, Hitomi, Ui, and Ayaka if this was the selection meet, so regardless of ‘needing’ Chiaki on beam or Asuka on vault/bars, neither would have made it based on how they ranked here. They ‘need’ to be in the top 4, period. This always creates problems, and on five-person teams where they can use specialists, it was top 3 all-arounders from the NHK Trophy plus 2 who prove themselves at Event Championships, but on a four-person team, I feel like this ranking situation could work out to create a team that’s super unbalanced for them, especially since they have so many gymnasts who are great on vault but comparatively weak elsewhere…like Ayaka and Ui both have really strong DTYs, which boosts them in the AA, but beam and floor aren’t that strong, leaving them in the dust in TFs. But if Yuna can have a good day and get into the top 4, I think a team of Mai, Hitomi, Yuna, and then someone else with a DTY (or Rudi) and good bars would offer some nice balance, and right now I’m really liking the two young ones (Ui and Towa) for that…but this has often been Asuka’s role in the past. Chiaki is an option for one of the spots but her inconsistency is a risk. But what I love is that they have SO many gymnasts to choose from right now…their depth is so fantastic, it’s amazing that we can name 10 gymnasts who are realistic team threats, and that we are leaving out gymnasts from the 2016 team and who went to worlds this quad. Just phenomenal.

Mai with at 57!!! Yasser!
I remember when Mai was a promising junior with massive skills (quad turn on beam and huge tumbling were her claim to fame, IIRC). I love to see her longevity!
