Simone Biles
So far in 2021, we’ve covered a total of 99 meets, with only one more senior-level meet to go – the Italian Championships this coming weekend – before we head over to the Olympic Games. Isn’t it about time we take a look at how the scores have been stacking up?
There have been a total of 3,001 all-around performances, as well as 3,664 vault scores, 3,841 bars scores, 3,967 beam scores, and 3,822 floor scores so far this year, in addition to 622 two-vault attempts that get averaged for an event final (or qualification into a final).
Below, find a list of the top all-around and event scores thus far, as well as the top D scores for each event. An asterisk (*) next to the name denotes a junior competitor, and I’ve removed bonus from all domestic meets to keep things as accurate as possible. As a note, we only include juniors in the two-vault averages or D-score combos if they’re competing vaults from two different families, and if a competition uses bonuses but their score sheets don’t differentiate those bonuses from the totals, we don’t include those scores in our database.
Note that we also only include difficulty scores that were actually awarded by judges in a competition – Guan Chenchen may be attempting a 7.0 beam routine, but because China did not reveal D and E breakdowns for any of its competitions this year aside from event finals at nationals, a 6.2 is the highest we have on record for her, so that’s what we included.

How did Ou Yushan have a 15.633 on beam but not have a top 10 difficulty score?

I talked about this in the intro – China didn’t include D/E breakdowns on its official results this year because they want to keep them secret. I only have official D scores from event finals at nationals. I think Li Shijia has been attempting around a 6.7-6.9 D score based on the routines I’ve seen of hers, but in EFs at nationals the judges only awarded her a 6.3 for her routine (which is ranked 7th on the best BB difficulty for 2021 so far). I only include D scores that were *actually* awarded by judges, otherwise this list would have a lot of 6.5+ beam start values.

I’m sorry – I misunderstood. I assumed since the score was given in an official competition it was “awarded” by judges. After all since there is a score, they judges did award a D score – but apparently they just didn’t tell people :-). I was thinking you just didn’t include trained and planned routines but not yet competed so they weren’t “awarded”.

Ohhh yes, sorry!! Yes, judges awarded D scores but we just don’t know what they are. I’ve seen a lot of fans put together D scores based on videos, and for most events it’s close, but on beam where a gymnast technically has a 6.8 routine but then a judge only credits 6.2 due to missed connections, I don’t want to put the inaccurate attempted D score if that’s not what the judges actually gave! Unfortunately China and Russia both published most of their national results without sharing D scores so there are definitely a few routines that could end up higher than what we have here.

Thanks Lauren! I’ve been waiting for this post. The d scores really help compare gymnasts from different countries. So many talented gymnasts with potential to medal at these olympics.

You’re welcome! I love seeing the D scores side by side. It’s amazing how close the top gymnasts are on almost every event!

It really will. I’m especially looking forward to watching everyone compete in the qualifications. So many incredible athletes are going to go out at this stage.

What do so many countries have against getting an extra uneven bars medal this year??? The UK, the US, China, etc.

I feel like they’re ALL saying “the bars field is too deep, a medal would be impossible, our bars specialist is staying home” and now half of the would-be bars field is sitting at home!

Dear Gymternet,
The gap between Simone Bilesâ AA score (60.565) and second-place Sunisa Leeâs score (58.166) is 2.399 points. Thatâs greater than the gap between Sunisa Lee in second place and 22nd place!
Best regards,

Thanks for that!! That’s absolutely wild!

Dear Lauren, You’re very welcome. It’s hard to explain to people who don’t follow gymnastics just how large a margin of 2.399 is. I point out that the 2005 Women’s World Championship AA event was won by 0.001 (Chellsie Memmel on 37.824 over Anastasia Liukin on 37.823) and that Simone Biles’ winning AA margin at Rio of 2.1 points was 2,100 times the 2005 margin. That seems to make the point!

Wow, 2,100 times the 2005 margin!!!! I’ve never thought of it in those terms before…that’s incredible.

Wait, when did Maria Kharenkova whip out a 15.125 beam score?! I know Russian domestic scoring can be lax, but…

Hahahaha yes, this was at the federal championships, which are the qualifiers to national championships for each federal district, and they are even more ridiculous with scoring than nationals, LOL. That same routine probably would have gotten around a 12 internationally. I don’t know how it’s even possible to add three points back to a single event with overscoring, but alas, if anyone can do it, it’s Russia.

Romania and Ukraine could overscore more

China has 5 of the 8 top beam scores-I am sure they will do well, however I doubt that holds up internationally!

I am amending my comment slightly—I should clarify—they will get 2- per countried out obviously, and I am skeptical if their scores will stay that high at an Olympics.
