11:01 am. As for individual finals, Shang is currently 7th in the all-around with a 56.332 while Wang Yan is 13th with a 55.566, so both of these ladies should make it. Wang will also get in on vault and possibly beam, only Fan is in the race on bars, and Shang COULD get in on floor but it’s not a given as she’s currently in 6th.

Hong Un Jong is currently hundredths behind Maria Paseka in the vault final, pushing Chuso out. She averaged a 15.533 with the same vaults as Paseka, who averaged 15.583.

10:58 am. Soooo y’all, China is in THIRD right now with a 225.127 behind Russia and…GREAT. BRITAIN. The Brits are leading them by two full points, and then Italy is less than a point behind them. Like…woah. This year is WEIRD! North Korea currently in 12th with 207.987.

10:57 am. Mao Yi just scratched. They’re like “Haha we’re done. Mao Yi can’t save us. No one can.”

10:53 am. Wang Yan BB- Punch front, switch ring, sheep jump. Big wobble on the roundoff layout but she saves it. Grigoras. Front aerial to split jump. Triple full stuck with feet apart and chest low. 14.5

Like 99.9% sure GB is about to qualify ahead of China. *Internal screams*

10:48 am. Shang Chunsong BB- Suuuuuuper long wait. Like, five minutes as I type this now. Coach tells her to get off the podium and do a bhs layout. Here we go! Six minute total wait btw. Bhs bhs beautiful layout, leg comes up but she’s fine. Split jump to straddle jump, big switch half, wobbles slightly. Off on bhs loso loso. CHINA. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU. Russia’s probably extra happy they didn’t bother wasting Afan on beam yesterday. Big wobble on double spin. Front aerial, wobble, misses connection to sheep. Side aerial to sissone into a weird lunge. Triple full with a big bounce back. I blame the SIX MINUTE WAIT for that routine. 13.166

10:44 am. Yami Peña FX- 1.5 to front full in the background while we wait. Sounded like a hit routine based on the crowd reaction. Maybe not. 11.766

10:41 am. Fan Yilin BB- OMG the CUTEST smile when she salutes. She’s like “yeah I was the one who hit bars, jealous?” NOOOOOO I CURSED HER. Falls on layout. Hits jumps. Switch ring. Full turn, slight check. Front aerial to sheep jump, then a jump to her side somi, switch to side aerial, lovely 2.5. 13.833

10:38 am. Chen Siyi BB- Gotta be so nerve-wracking after just finishing last up with that bar routine. Bhs layout, leg up. Punch front tuck, step back. Switch ring, leg up. Side aerial a little low but hit. Front aerial, pause before sheep (step back), jump series to Korbut is lovely. Switch leap, full turn, double tuck with a step. Lots of nervous mistakes but good for her for staying on. 13.7

10:32 am. Janessa Dai FX- Love this gymnast! 1.5 and she skids forward. Some lovely choreo work though, and finishes with a double pike. 12.191

Could you imagine living in a time where China would be felled by their trusted front pirouette elements before now?! The Weiler half for Wang, and front pirouettes for Chen and Tan. What a life. In a way this is more devastating than Romania’s bars because at least you kind of expect that from them? A 56.098 is their score on an event that should be 60+ for them. At least it’s not team finals?

10:29 am. Chen Siyi UB- Front giant 1.5 to Tkachev, Ono to Healy and she peels off. WHAT is HAPPENING. Gets back up for pak, stalder to Ray, and finishes with a beautiful floaty double layout with a step. 12.8

10:28 am. Four routines in and China doesn’t have a 15 on bars yet.

10:25 am. Tan Jiaxin UB- She’s pulling a Tabitha Yim with some good one-on-one conversations with herself while waiting 80 hours for Fan’s score.

Nice handstand, Ricna to pak, Maloney to Gienger with weird form, Ono to front giant full and she just wildly peels off. You could see that or something similar coming a mile away, this routine was so rushed and nervous from the start. Gets back on for a Tkachev between the bars, and finishes with a Ray dismount with a big step forward. 13.666, which they’ll have to count.

10:21 am. Fan Yilin UB- inbar full to inbar to Komova II to pak to Chow to Gienger, NICE. Inbar half to Ono to Healy, double layout a little low but just a step back. 14.966

10:18 am. 17 more hours of chalking and testing the sturdiness of the bars, I think now we’ll get some more routines.

Shang Chunsong UB- Perfect handstand right into her eponymous Shang (clear hip piked Tkachev), pak, shaposh to Gienger, quick pirouettes of the Ono/Healy variety, Jaeger, full-out with a bounce back. 14.666

10:15 am. After chalking the bars for 16 hours, China is finally ready to go!

Wang Yan UB- Weiler, Weiler, that second one was supposed to be a Weiler half. Does a giant half to get back in the right direction but she’s already out of sorts. Just kind of regroups on the bar for a minute, front giant full to straddle Jaeger, pak, toe shoot, front giant to front giant half, double layout with a tiny bounce. 11.8

10:04 am. Nadine Nathan BB- Aww, I remember her from Youth Olympic Games! She was good there, got into a final if I remember correctly. Bars maybe? Long wait as they figure out Gomez’s score.

Punch front tuck, step. Bhs loso with nice straight legs, step back. Switch leap, pause, wolf jump to sissone. Side aerial, great extension, wobble but holds it. Back tuck. Switch half. Lots of really good elements when she does them one at a time, no combo. Full L turn gets rotated an extra quarter turn but she controls it. Warning bell! Dings again, she’s over time. 2.5 almost fully rotated, step back. 12.366

10:02 am. Kim So Yong FX- Caught it from the middle choreo. She is a perfectionist with her leap landings. She also has some nice arm stuff happening. Very quick Memmel turn. Sticks crap out of double pike! YAS. That was sweet. 13.033

10:00 am. Sofi Gomez BB- Come on GURL make finals please. NOPE. Off on bhs tuck full. WHY GOD WHY. It’s gonna be that kind of day. Switch to switch half, full turn (leg up), side aerial, side somi, wobble on front aerial, switch side, double pike with a bounce back. 13.066 (6.0 SV)

9:59 am. Pak Sin Hyang FX- Double tuck with a bounce back. I like her legit ballet arms before the second pass! In fact I was so excited about them, I missed the second pass completely. Her arm movements in general are like, mesmerizing!? Double pike. 13.266

9:57 am. Simona Castro BB- Aww, off on front aerial. Bhs layout is piked and she falls on that as well. NOOOOO. Switch leap, full turn goes over an extra quarter, jumps are good, side aerial with leg up, sissone meant to go to side somi but there’s a pause and then she wobbles on the side somi, but fights like crazy and holds onto it. 2.5 with a step off the mat. 10.3

9:55 am. Hong Un Jong FX- Missed her first pass but saw whip whip to double pike which was cool though OOB, I forget, and a double tuck. 2.5 to finish? How did I forget already. Like 70% sure I slept during this routine. 13.033

9:54 am. Chen Siyi VT- DTY, really bad landing, but at least she didn’t crash as she did in the warmup. 14.233

9:52 am. Tan Jiaxin VT- DTY, most powerful of the bunch, big bounce back. 14.866

9:51 am. Wang Yan VT- Second vault is a handspring Rudi mostly straight until the end, lands basically in a pike, but her feet didn’t really move on the landing much. 15.133, and a 15.099 average puts her second at the moment and moves Chuso to 8th.

9:50 am. Wang Yan VT- Double tsuk, EXCELLENT landing. Mostly clean, just a little bent knee action at one point. And she’s doing it to “Bittersweet Symphony” which should be Team China’s theme song. 15.066

9:49 am. Mao Yi VT- DTY, not bad. High off the table, off to the side, crunched, and a step over, but I mean…the others in warm-ups were crashed, so… 14.766

9:46 am. Shang Chunsong VT- Excellent stuck FTY! Really high off the table though…and a little piked. So not excellent. But A-. 14.1

9:44 am. The Chinese vault warmup is crash, crash, crash.

9:39 am. Kang Yong Mi BB- Fall on punch front. Front aerial with a pause before wolf + split jump, another fall on her bhs loso. Switch side. ANOTHER fall on a front toss. Lawd. I’m pretty sure she is 900% over it. Switch leap, misses connection to side aerial, wobble. Choreo is robotic and halfhearted at this point. Poor girl. Just does a back tuck dismount. 8.966

9:36 am. Well, we saw a punch front from Hong Un Jong on beam! You go girl. 11.566

Tan Jiaxin FX- 1.5 through to triple full, a little under-rotated. Triple spin, mostly controlled. 2.5 to punch front tuck, sat. Again with the no punch out of the 2.5. Music is def a classier version of “all I wanna do is gunshot gunshot gunshot gunshot cash register noise.” Double tuck with a step back. This choreo is painful…she looks like she is sleepwalking. Nice form on her double pike, but it’s still a bit low. 12.766

9:35 am. Sofi Gomez UB- toe full to Maloney to clear hip to Ray, YAS. Bail to toe shoot, toe half to Jaeger, UGH. Attempts giant full but bends over halfway through, gets it around, does it again and the same thing happens. She was just going far too quickly. Finishes with high full-in. 11.5

9:32 am. Mao Yi FX- 3.5 to punch front lands fully out of bounds. Second pass is a 2.5 to front layout half but she gets no punch out of the 2.5 and basically lands horizontal to the floor (like Frags’ jump down). Double tuck with a step. Did I miss a pass? I’ve been awake for 22 hours. 12.5

9:31 am. Franchesca Santi UB- Giant full, giant half to Jaeger, pak, clear hip half, toe shoot, labored kips not fully to handstand, full-in with a step. Really, not bad for what it was, from the point where we tuned in. 11.4

Pak Sin Hyang BB- Punch front, bhs bhs layout but the layout was really piked. 13.666

9:28 am. Shang Chunsong FX- Opens with a 3.5 to punch front pike, INSANE as usual. 1.5 through to triple to punch front tuck. NOT BAD. Who taught her how to tumble?! Quick spin but a slight lack of control. I don’t know WHAT her music is doing. Low set on her bhs going into her third pass, like…yikes low. Finishes with double pike, low and skidded a bit. Oh wait, not done yet, we get a magical double wolf turn into a fun knee pose. That’s another good wolf turn exit strategy. But not as good as Paseka’s stop drop and roll. 14.4

9:27 am. Kim So Yong BB- So far it’s pretty messy on each skill, but it’s steady. Front aerial with a wobble, split jump to wolf jump. Switch with a wobble, side somi, another wobble. That’s all we’ll see from that! 13.233

9:24 am. Wang Yan FX- Dramatic start to this routine, which she opens with a double double, a little shuffle but hit. Next up is a 1.5 through to triple full to punch front tuck with a stumble but it’s such a big pass, I forgive it. The 2.5 to punch front is a little off, and she finishes with a double pike hopped back. Could’ve used a bit more control throughout. 14.2

9:23 am. Quick view of Yami Peña’s Produnova and it was fully sat. I only saw it for a hot second and it looked butt first, not feet first, but only time will tell. Doubt she would’ve made the vault final either way, honestly. 14.633, averages 14.066 for crashed DTY as her second vault. Yeah, no final.

9:21 am. It’s actually Lauren right now! We’re getting started with Chen Siyi, who hits a triple full to start, hit her second pass (I missed it setting up the blog), a 2.5 to punch front, a big old smile on her face, and a low but solid double pike to finish. 13.533

  1. Seriously, what just happened on bars for China? 😦 I never thought I’d ever see that many Chinese gymnasts fall on front pirouettes in a row…

The entire Chinese bars rotation felt rushed. None of them had the steadiness of Yao or Huang to anchor the rotation. Hopefully Tan, Fan and Shang will get it together for team finals…
