Alyssa Baumann’s scores are not right., she put up a 15 on beam at jesolo and a 14.25 on bars
LikeLike
The scores are season averages, not what they actually scored.
Alyssa had a 9.1 on bars at the WOGA Classic and a 14.25 in Jesolo, and then on beam she had a 15.0 in Jesolo prelims and a 14.55 in finals. That averages 11.675 and 14.775, which is what we have listed. If we put up season highs instead of averages, the final outcome would be inaccurate because no one is going to get their season high on every routine.

Oh I see, but wouldn’t it make more sense to only count hits?

If a gymnast can’t hit a routine on a regular basis, it should show in the scores. Unfortunately, I don’t (and won’t) have enough scores to drop the top and bottom scores for each event.
LikeLike
No, because it’s not guaranteed that a gymnast is going to hit in a competition…if they fall or make big errors 50% of the time then there’s a big chance they’ll do it in the future. When we do our prediction averages we usually take off the top and bottom scores to average so there’s more accuracy but it still ends up being about the same (and Alyssa wouldn’t factor into the picture on bars anyway, so the point is kind of moot).

Soloski from Canada put up some of Canada’s best floor scores this year. She had major upgrades on beam and bars going into Nationals and had she not gotten hurt, I think she would be in the mix.

You may have just predicted the us worlds team with those 6 bolded names. If they all stay on track it would be hard to justify leaving any of them home (except maybe Kocian if Kyla starts hitting her bars consistently). Does anyone know the D score on Kocian’s bars and also Kyla’s new D score with her upgraded bars? Just curious.

Ok so I saw Kocians was a 6.5 last night. Not sure what Kyla’s will be when she hits??

Hello, I love your blog!
However, I have a disagreement with your methodology. The method of making an average of all the competitions creates an advantage for gymnasts who participate in many local competitions (Note that you only entering national competitions in the local level but all international competitions – large and small. A nationak compatiition has higher grades and d score than most of the international meets) .
I would suggest a different methodology: use the highest scores of all exercises and perhaps even ignoring local competitions or inventing a factor of importance to competition and multiplies the result by this factor.
What do you think?

Lauren and I answered a similar question a few weeks ago. It should be one of the first ones on this post.

I understand your argument. But In my opinion, you should offset the fact that the gymnast falls with the fact that until the Olympics or World Championships the gymnast will upgrade the D and the E grades.
For example: there is no chance your method would have predict the WAG scores of the British on floor. the Brithis Gymnasts have made many upgrades and their score was much higher than their average

Upgrades/Difficulty scores hardly matter if the gymnasts do not have the execution.

It’s so sad to see how far Romania has gone down. Basically without their veterans, they look like they can’t even qualify to rio ;(. Sad to see that we don’t even have any score this year to be able to count Larisa or Ponor into the mix for them.
It’s also interesting in this qualification format how much different the ranking might be. I wonder if Japan would be actually able to beat china in qualification because it doesn’t seem like it could happen but it seems like the numbers say it could?
The other thing I also want to add is that maybe the harsh scoring in Chinese nationals is dragging team china bars numbers down? Hard to imagine they would get a bunch of 14’s at worlds, although they do have consistency issues sometimes.

Japan definitely has some sort of bonus system and China has strict domestic bars judging.

I would definitely be okay with this podium at Worlds

Thanks for the update. glad to see Romania back to where they are. though still a lot of work for them to do…
Also thanks for listing all the competitions in here by month.
that’s too bad Aliya is scratched from Russian team but it looks like they are still a great team even without her. That’s a change from 2014 where without her they would’ve been in trouble…

Not sure how much it would make a difference but did you also count komova unofficial score in EF of Russian cup? even though I am still a little leery about vika consistency, there is no doubt that she has a gignormous possible 6.9 potential ub and is very much still world class medal material IF she hits….

So team USA score went down a small notch to allow others slightly some advantages…. We will have to see if this team will peak right on cue or will Marta face her first huge disaster experiment.. Having emphasizing a lower risk strategy of AA in the past, will her experiment with specialists work?

Wow, that gignormous AA score by Larisa as well as the fairly decent score by Ana Maria Ocolisan and everyone else really help to prop Romania team up even if they still lack depth. 2nd and 3rd TF podium will be a spectacular fight.

According to these numbers, Japan appears to have the ability to crack the Big4 at least in qual. But realistically in real life, do they have any chance at all in TF?

Most likely not. Their domestic competitions had a bonus system that was not shown in their scores. I can see them as number 5, easily!

I spotted a mistake. There are 8 gymnasts in China’s roster and Huang Huidan isn’t on their roster. Also did they promote tan Jiaxin to a member and demote xiaofang to alternate?

I missed that article. I hope siyi and tan jiaxin end up on the main team. Tan jiaxin has a nice bar routine in a gymnastics society of the same routines adding and deleting say in bars or tkatchev for a jaegars. She also has a valuable clean vault. Siyi is inconsistent but very artistic and has a nice bar and beam routine when she hits.
